Antwerp is flat and built-up, so set expectations honestly: this is city walking and parkland, not mountain hiking. What the city does have is a good spread of free green space, from formal parks to the river embankments and a genuine left-bank beach, all reachable without a ticket. Here are the best walks that stay inside or on the edge of the city.
Rivierenhof
The largest of Antwerp’s parks, out toward Deurne and reachable by tram, Rivierenhof mixes woodland, meadows, ponds, and easy looping paths that suit anything from a short stroll to a couple of hours on foot. It is the closest thing to a proper walk-in-nature day without leaving the city, and it costs nothing.
Stadspark
Right on the edge of the centre, Stadspark is the quick green escape: lawns, a pond, and shaded paths a few minutes from the Meir shopping street. It is not big, but it is the easiest free breather between sights.
Middelheim sculpture park
Middelheim doubles as an open-air art museum and a park: contemporary sculpture set across parkland with no ticket booth on site. You walk it for free, and it works as both a gentle stroll and a proper collection.
The Scheldt embankments
The reworked riverfront gives a long, flat walking line along the Scheldt, with wide-open views over the water and the port. Starting near Het Steen, whose courtyard and rooftop are free, you can follow the embankment for as far as you feel like, and it is the best sunset walk in the city.
The left bank and Sint-Anna beach
Cross the river for free on the 1933 Sint-Annatunnel, with its historic wooden escalators, or the free 24/7 ferry, and you reach Linkeroever: parkland, the Galgenweel water, and the Sint-Anna beach with a head-on view back at the old-town skyline. With the premetro tunnel closed for renovation until around the end of March 2027, the free tunnel and ferry are the crossing to use anyway.

Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles, carry a light rain layer since the weather turns quickly, and remember that the wider Flanders heaths and coast, the closest thing to real hiking country, sit a train ride out rather than in the city itself.
