Heidelberg Romantic Getaways: Views and Dinners
Couples come to Heidelberg for the view of a ruined castle above a river and for the old university town behind it. The mood is old-fashioned in the best sense, with sandstone, vineyards and candlelit taverns. Below are three ways to plan a weekend, plus the practical details.
A first evening: the Old Bridge at dusk
Walk to the Alte Brücke as the light fades and cross to the north bank for the postcard view of the castle. The bridge gate and its bronze monkey make an easy photo stop on the way. Then return along the river or up Hauptstrasse for dinner.
A second day: sunset on the Philosophenweg
The Philosophenweg runs along the Heiligenberg slope across the river and faces the castle directly. Benches in the Philosophengärtchen make a good pause. The approach by the Schlangenweg is a steep, cobbled climb that is slippery in rain, leaves and frost, so go before dusk and wear proper shoes. Heidelberg was the home of German Romanticism in the early 1800s, which is why the walk is named for thinkers and poets.
A third day: the castle itself
The Schlossticket is €11 for adults until 31 December 2026 and €12 after that, and includes the funicular ride from Kornmarkt, the courtyard and the Great Tun. The grounds are open from 09:00 to 18:00. The garden can be visited in daylight hours. For a guided look inside, add €6 per adult.
The illumination
Heidelberg’s famous night is the castle illumination, which takes place on two Saturdays each year. In 2027 these are 10 July and 4 September. The ruin glows red, and fireworks start at 22:15 and last about 15 minutes. It costs nothing to watch from public spots, though roads close from 16:00 and the Old Bridge closes first. Official guidance is to travel by public transport, since there is no parking. The Nepomuk-Terrasse at the north end of the bridge has food, drink and music but takes no table bookings. Cruises that view the display start from €89.90, and there is information on Heidelberg Marketing .
Where to eat and what to buy
- Zum Roten Ochsen, Hauptstrasse 217: a student inn run by the Spengel family, with reservations by phone.
- Kulturbrauerei, Leyergasse 6: house-brewed beer and a full restaurant menu.
- Knösel, Haspelgasse 16: the Studentenkuss chocolate wafer, a local gift.
Winter weekends
The Christmas market opens on 23 November 2026 and runs to 22 December on six squares, with an ice rink on Karlsplatz. A 50-minute mulled wine cruise on the Neckar starts from €22.
