Heidelberg Castle Tours, Cruises and Museum Visits
This page answers the questions visitors ask most about organised sights in Heidelberg: which ticket to buy, how the boats work and where a guided visit adds something.
Which castle ticket do I need?
For the courtyard, the Great Tun and the German Pharmacy Museum, the Schlossticket is enough. It costs €11 for adults and €5.50 reduced until 31 December 2026, rising to €12 and €6 on 1 January 2027, and it includes a return trip on the lower funicular. The rooms of the Friedrichsbau and Ottheinrichsbau are only open on a guided tour, which adds €6 for adults and €3 reduced. A family tour is €15. The castle’s own visitor information page lists current hours: daily 09:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30.
Is the funicular a tour in itself?
Many visitors treat it that way. The line is split in two at Molkenkur, and a Panoramaticket runs the whole way to the Königstuhl for €17 return, with the castle admissions included. The Königstuhlticket for the upper section alone is €7 one way and €10 return. A funicular closure is proposed for October 2027 to March 2028 while bridge works take place, with buses replacing the trains. Fares are listed on bergbahn-heidelberg.de .
How do the river cruises work?
The operator is Weisse Flotte, and most trips leave from the Stadthalle pier at Neckarstaden 25.
- Sightseeing cruise: 50 minutes, from €19 with a drink included.
- Green-City cruise: 50 minutes on a solar-assisted boat, from €19, boarding beside the Old Bridge.
- Highlight cruise: 90 minutes, from €29, with a first listed date of 27 March 2027.
- Vier-Burgen cruise: about 1.5 hours upstream to Neckarsteinach and a 3-hour round trip.
Cruises are seasonal, so check the Weisse Flotte calendar for the dates that fit your trip. In winter there is a 50-minute mulled wine cruise from €22.
Is there a worthwhile university tour?
The Studentenkarzer and the University Museum work as a pair. The combined ticket costs €7.50 adult and €5 reduced, and the Karzer opens at 10:30 on weekdays from October to May. The Karzer is closed from 24 December 2026 to 11 January 2027. Booking up to two weeks ahead is recommended.
What about evening tours?
The night watchman tour called Auf den Spuren der Nachtwächter meets at the Rathaus entrance on Marktplatz and lasts about 90 minutes. Tickets start from about €16.90, and tours usually start at 20:00 or 20:30. Dates change, so check before you travel.
Can I save with a pass?
The HeidelbergCARD is priced at €25 for a single day, €36 for two days and €40 for four days. It includes the castle ticket with the funicular, free entry to the University Museum, the Studentenkarzer and several other museums, and free travel on regional transport across the VRN area.
