Dresden Activities: Paddle Steamers and Courtyards
Most visitors come to Dresden for the Baroque skyline, then discover that the best afternoons are spent doing something rather than queuing at a ticket desk. The city has old-fashioned river boats, two cable railways, a street of themed courtyards and a giant panorama in a gasworks building. Here is how each one works, with euro prices that you should check on the day.
Quick reference
| Activity | Where | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| Paddle steamer line trip | Terrassenufer piers 1 to 5 | 16 to 31 EUR one way by zone |
| Loschwitz cable car | Loschwitz | about 5 EUR single |
| Kunsthofpassage | Görlitzer Straße 21 to 25 | free |
| Panometer | Gasanstaltstraße 8b, Reick | about 16 EUR adult |
| Semperoper performance | Theaterplatz | varies by seat |
On the river
Dresden’s steamers belong to the Sächsische Dampfschifffahrt, which describes its fleet as the oldest and largest paddle-steamer fleet in the world. Piers 1 to 5 line the Terrassenufer below the Altstadt, and the ticket office is at Pier 2. The city sightseeing trip, the Historische Stadtfahrt on line 72, lasts around ninety minutes. The Schlösserfahrt on line 61 goes out to Pillnitz and returns after roughly three hours and a quarter.
Adult line fares rise with the tariff zone: 16, 21, 28 or 31 EUR for zones 1 to 4, with 11 EUR for the return leg. If you only want a taste, count on about 16 EUR for the shortest hop. Because the boats need enough water under the hull, a dry summer can reduce the timetable sharply. In July 2026 only city trips ran. Before you set out, open the operator’s live departure board and confirm that your sailing exists. The same operator lists evening cruises with a live Dixie swing band and, in autumn, family rides.
Up the hill at Loschwitz
The funicular dates from 1895 and the suspension railway from 1901. They run on a separate ticket from the city transport network, so a day pass or a Deutschlandticket does not cover them. A single is from about 5 EUR, and a same-day return is from about 7 EUR; the operator’s page confirms the current rates and revision dates. See the DVB cable car page .
A walk through five courtyards
The Kunsthofpassage in the Äußere Neustadt joins five courtyards, each with its own theme: Hof der Fabelwesen, Hof der Tiere, Hof der Metamorphosen, Hof des Lichts and Hof der Elemente. Look in the last for the Trichterwand, a drainpipe wall that plays notes. Entry costs nothing.
Inside a gasometer
The Panometer’s 360 degree picture currently shows the Great Barrier Reef. It opens 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and to 18:00 on weekends and public holidays. The adult price is about 16 EUR; see panometer-dresden.de for what is on.
Evenings and the city card
The season at the Semperoper is listed on semperoper.de, and seat prices depend on the production. If you want a tour with a guide instead of a ticket for a show, browse Elbe and city tours on Viator .
For getting around, a single trip is 3.60 EUR and a day ticket 9.50 EUR. The Dresden City Card covers local transport and some discounts, and it does not give free museum entry.
