Multi-Day Trips from a Dresden Base
Dresden has no packaged multi-day tours or long-distance routes of its own. A stay of three to five nights works best when you keep one hotel and fan out each day. The outline below shows how to sequence the main sights so closing days and weather do not wreck the plan. If you want a day-by-day schedule with timings, use the 4 day plan or the 6 day plan .
The shape of the stay
| Day | Focus | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Altstadt: Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Residenzschloss, Semperoper | Zwinger closed Monday, Residenzschloss closed Tuesday |
| 2 | Neustadt, Elbe, Loschwitz | water level, cable car revisions |
| 3 | Saxon Switzerland | trail closures |
| 4 | Meissen and Moritzburg | Albrechtsburg closed Tuesday, Moritzburg closed part of November |
| 5 | Remaining museums and gardens | seasons |
Day 1 in more detail
Spend the first day on the south bank. The Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Residenzschloss are close together, and the Semperoper is a short walk away. The Historic Green Vault takes timed entry at 18 EUR (13.50 EUR reduced) that you pay for separately, so secure a slot before arriving.
Days 2 and 3
The second day belongs to the north bank, where the Kunsthofpassage lies in the Äußere Neustadt, and to the hills of Loschwitz. A paddle steamer ride fits in only if the Elbe is high enough, and the cable cars close briefly for yearly checks, so keep the afternoon loose. On the third day, take the S1 for the Bastei or for Königstein. Look at the national park notices on saechsische-schweiz.de because the 2026 storm closed some trails and the neighbouring rock castle is shut.
Days 4 and 5
Meissen and Moritzburg suit one long day or two short ones. The S1 reaches Meissen in about 38 minutes, and Moritzburg needs the S1 to Radebeul Ost plus the narrow-gauge railway. Leave day five for the Albertinum (14 EUR), the Hygiene-Museum (12 EUR; under 17 free) or the Panometer. Pillnitz and its park are open from late March to early November.
Passes worth comparing
- SKD tickets: 28 EUR for one day, 32 EUR for two, excluding the Historic Green Vault and special exhibitions.
- MuseumsCard Dresden: two days, about 27 museums, around 35 EUR from resellers; it leaves out the Historic Green Vault and public transport.
- Dresden City Card: transport and discounts, but no free museum admission.
- Tram and bus day ticket: 9.50 EUR. A Deutschlandticket is 63 EUR per month.
Seasonal notes
A winter stay can include the Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt, which runs from late November to 24 December and is free to enter. In February, the city commemorates the bombing of 13 to 15 February 1945, and demonstrations near 13 February do not disrupt ordinary sightseeing.
