Dresden Day Trips: Saxon Switzerland, Moritzburg
Saxony’s capital is surrounded by easy excursions. Two of them follow the S1 S-Bahn line, one goes by narrow-gauge steam train, and one depends on the river. The list below starts with the trip that most visitors want and ends with the ones that need more planning. Fares are in euros, may change, and are worth confirming before you set out.

The Bastei and the Rathen ferry
The stone bridge was completed in 1851, measures 76.5 metres and can be crossed at any hour without paying. A barrier-free viewing platform, the Basteiaussicht, has been open since 2023. To get there, ride the S1 to Kurort Rathen and take the Elbe ferry from Niederrathen to Oberrathen. Adults pay 1.50 EUR one way or 3.00 EUR return, and children aged 6 to 16 pay 1.00 or 2.00 EUR. The ferry has its own ticket, because VVO fares, the Gästekarte mobil and the Deutschlandticket are not valid on it. It runs all year, from 04:30 on weekdays and 05:30 at weekends. Buses 237, 239 and 254 are an alternative.
Closures matter here. The rock castle beside the bridge, Felsenburg Neurathen, has been shut since 2023. A storm on 31 July 2026 closed parts of the national park, and while the Basteiweg from Rathen over the bridge reopened by October, the Schindergraben and sections of Malerweg stages 3 and 5 did not. Read the current notices at saechsische-schweiz.de and wear boots with grip, since wet sandstone is slippery. The park prohibits drones.
Festung Königstein
From November to March the fortress opens 09:00 to 17:00. In high season the adult price is about 17 EUR, but confirm it on festung-koenigstein.de .
Meissen
The Erlebniswelt MEISSEN on Talstraße 9 is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00. Adults pay 15 EUR booking online or 16 EUR at the door, youths aged 6 to 18 pay 12 EUR, and the family ticket is 30 EUR. The Albrechtsburg on Domplatz opens Wednesday to Monday, so Tuesday is out. A combined ticket for both costs 24 EUR and is valid for three days.
Schloss Moritzburg
An adult ticket costs 12 EUR and comes with a HistoPad. The castle shuts for a few weeks in November and has shorter hours through winter, when a stage show runs with online tickets only. You reach it by S1 to Radebeul Ost, then the Lößnitzgrundbahn, which costs 6.60 EUR one way or 13.00 EUR return and does not accept VVO tickets. Buses exist, but do not count on a direct one; check vvo-online.de. See the castle’s page .
Pillnitz
River service to Pillnitz needs high water. The park and Schlossmuseum are open from late March to early November for about 8 EUR, and the applied-arts museum inside is closed throughout 2026.
Farther away
Leipzig and Prague take more than an hour each way (about 65 to 90 minutes and 2 hours), so treat them as full days. For ready-made options, look at Viator’s Dresden listings .
