Walking Tours in Dresden: Two Self-Guided Loops
You do not need a guide to walk Dresden well. The city has two natural loops, one on each side of the Elbe, and both are flat. Follow the waypoints below, and add museum stops where you like. Euro prices and opening times can change, so verify them before heading out.
Loop 1: Altstadt, about 2.5 km
- Neumarkt, in front of the Frauenkirche.
- Brühl’s Terrace, the promenade along the river.
- Schlossplatz, with the Katholische Hofkirche.
- Augustusstraße, home of the 102 m Fürstenzug mural.
- Theaterplatz and the Semperoper.
- The Zwinger. Its courtyard, Kronentor and Nymphenbad cost nothing to enter.
All six stops are within the same compact district, and the route needs no hills. If you want to go inside anything, the Frauenkirche is free to enter during Open Church hours.
Loop 2: Neustadt, about 3.5 km
- Cross the Augustusbrücke from the Altstadt.
- Find the golden rider statue, the Goldener Reiter, on the Neustädter Markt.
- Walk up Hauptstraße.
- Continue into the Äußere Neustadt and the Kunsthofpassage at Görlitzer Straße 21 to 25. Its five courtyards are free to walk through; the music-making drainpipe is in the Hof der Elemente.
- Pfunds Molkerei at Bautzner Straße 79. The 1880s dairy shop is covered in painted tiles and does not charge to look in. Hours differ by month, so read pfunds.de first.
Along the river
The Terrassenufer promenade opened again on 17 September 2025. It runs under Brühl’s Terrace and past the steamer piers, and costs nothing. The Carolabrücke was demolished and the replacement is not expected until around 2030, so walks cannot cross the river there. Trams 3 and 7 now run on diverted routes; confirm with DVB when you want to ride between loops.
Memorial visits, each on its own
Dresden has several places of remembrance. They are quiet, serious visits rather than stops on a stroll.
- Heidefriedhof: the Ehrenhain, a memorial grove for victims of the 1945 bombing, at Moritzburger Landstraße 299. Hours are 07:00 to 20:00 from April to October and 07:00 to 18:00 from November to March.
- DenkRaum Sophienkirche: at Sophienstraße near Postplatz, it commemorates the Sophienkirche pulled down by the GDR in 1962 and 1963. It carries this name since November 2025; look up its hours on its website.
- Münchner Platz: the former regional court, now a university building, where about 1,330 people were executed under the Nazis, 824 of them Czech, and 83 more in the Soviet and GDR years. The foundation Stiftung Sächsische Gedenkstätten runs it. Look up hours on its site.
- Bautzner Straße: a former Stasi detention site at number 112a with an entry price of 8 EUR (5 EUR reduced); see stasihaft-dresden.de .
