Houmt Souk Base for a Southern Tunisia Loop
Houmt Souk makes a convenient starting point for longer trips because the island has an airport, a taxi network and road links to the mainland. This guide sketches a five-day outline that pairs a night on Djerba with a short loop through the south by licensed 4x4 operator. Journey times and prices depend on the operator, so ask for both in writing.
Day 1: settle in around the port
Arrive at Djerba-Zarzis airport, about 9 km and 15 minutes from town. Check in, then explore on foot: Souk Errbaa, the jewellers’ lanes, the fish market and the harbour. Borj El Kebir, the 15th-century fortress, is open 09:30 to 16:30 in winter and 08:00 to 17:00 in summer, closed Fridays, 8 TND for non-residents.
Where to stay: the old town has funduq-style lodging, and larger hotels are found along the east-coast tourist strip.
Days 2 to 4: the southern loop
The southern circuit usually starts early. Operators generally cover the following:
- Matmata, a Berber settlement known for subterranean courtyards and cave dwellings.
- The ksour around Tataouine, fortified granaries with rows of vaulted storage rooms called ghorfas.
- Chenini and Douiret, hilltop settlements in the same region.
Tataouine town is about 130 to 145 km by road from Houmt Souk. Some operators offer Douz and Ksar Ghilane as extensions. Most itineraries take two to three nights, with overnight stops arranged by the operator.
Day 5: return and wind down
Return over the causeway or the Ajim-Jorf ferry. Queues build on the ferry in poor weather, so allow extra time. Use any spare time on Djerba itself, with Erriadh and its Djerbahood murals about 8 km from town and the pottery village of Guellala about 20 km away. If the season is right, October to May, add the Ras Rmel boat trip for flamingos.
Safety on the road south
Read the current UK FCDO map before you commit. Its warnings cover a strip along the Libyan border, including Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba, and several areas in the west of the country. Ask the operator to confirm the route avoids them. Djerba itself is not mentioned in the warnings.
Packing and money
- Bring cash in Tunisian dinars (TND). Cards and euros are accepted at some hotels only.
- Keep your exchange slips, since the dinar cannot be converted outside Tunisia.
- Carry plenty of water. The summer sun is intense on the road south.
Island-only alternative
Prefer to stay put? Three nights in Houmt Souk give time for the town, a taxi day to Erriadh and Guellala, and a day on the east coast around Midoun. Hire a bicycle early in the morning for the flat roads, or rent a car or scooter for the loop.
Accommodation can be compared on Booking.com . The FCDO travel advice for Tunisia gives the regional map, and the UNESCO page for Djerba describes the island’s heritage listing.
