Kaikoura Activities Guide: Sea, Sky and Land
Quick guide to Kaikōura
Kaikōura is a small coastal town on the east coast of the South Island, reached by SH1 from Christchurch (183 km south) or Picton (154 km north). Its activities fall into three groups: wildlife on the water, adventure on the land and in the air, and slower stops for food and history. Costs are in NZD and come from operators’ pages in October 2026.
Wildlife on the water
Whale watching. Whale Watch Kaikōura sails daily except Christmas Day. Adult tickets are about $185 and child tickets (ages 3 to 15) about $60. Children under 3 cannot board. Tours last about 3 hours 15 minutes, of which just over 2 hours is at sea, and 80% of the fare is refunded if no whale appears. Check in 30 minutes early at the Whaleway Station.
Dolphins. Dolphin Encounter, at 96 Esplanade, offers watching trips from about $150 for adults and $95 for children aged 3 to 14.
