Longer Stays and Overnight Escapes from Boston
For a trip of several days, the strongest plan is to stay in Boston and add one or two overnight stops by rail or ferry. The city side is easy to plan. Longer road-trip routes into New Hampshire or Maine have fewer confirmed details, so treat drive times and opening hours there as things to look up before you commit.
Base yourself in the city
Boston’s core is walkable and the subway reaches the rest. Fares are flat: $2.40 for the subway and $1.70 for a local bus. A 1-Day Pass is $11.00 and a 7-Day Pass is $22.50. Riders arriving at Logan can take the Silver Line SL1 to South Station for free. Four or five days comfortably cover the Freedom Trail, the North End, the waterfront, Cambridge and Fenway. The 4-day plan and 7-day plan show how to space it out. Check fares at mbta.com .
Overnight options by rail or ferry
- Salem plus Cape Ann. Take the train to Salem (Zone 3, $8.00), stay the night, then continue to Gloucester (Zone 7, $11.00) or Rockport (Zone 8, $12.25). This pairing avoids a car, which matters in busy October weekends.
- Plymouth. The Combination Pass at about $44 and the Heritage Pass at about $46 each last two days, which suits an overnight. The Plymouth Line train is Zone 8 at $12.25. See plimoth.org .
- Provincetown. Fast ferries take about 90 minutes and do not carry cars. They run seasonally, and some are weekend only late in the year. On summer weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the CapeFLYER train runs from South Station to Hyannis for a 2026 fare of $40 round trip, with children 11 and under free. See capeflyer.com .
- Martha’s Vineyard. The Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven ferry takes 45 minutes and was $11 one way for adults in 2026 ($22 round trip). Children 5 to 12 paid $5.75. Getting to Woods Hole from Boston adds roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so check your route. See steamshipauthority.com .
- Nantucket. It requires travel to Hyannis plus a ferry. Check the operators for fares. Like the Vineyard, it is an overnight destination.
New Hampshire mountains
Flume Gorge in Franconia Notch State Park is listed at $18 for adults when bought online and $21 at the window. Children 6 to 12 pay $16 online and $19 at the window. Reservations are strongly encouraged and the visitor center is listed as seasonal, so confirm dates. Drive times to the Kancamagus Highway and the coast of Maine should be checked on a map before you book a night.
Seasonal planning
Between roughly December and March, nor’easters, deep snow and biting wind can reshape a trip. Watch the forecast and the MBTA and ferry alerts, and expect island and coastal services to run reduced timetables or stop. The Boston Marathon on Monday 19 April 2027 is Patriots’ Day, when several museums and the USS Constitution are closed. Search for places to stay on Booking.com .
