Seattle as a Base for Multi-Day Journeys
Seattle is not a hub for neatly packaged multi-day products. What it offers instead is a good position for trips you assemble yourself with a train seat, a rental car or a ferry booking. This page lists six such trips with the facts that decide whether each one works. Costs are in US dollars before sales tax.
At a glance
- Vancouver, BC: about 4 hours on Amtrak Cascades, passport required.
- Portland, Oregon: about 3.5 hours by train or about 3 hours by car.
- San Juan Islands: ferry from Anacortes, roughly 1.5 hours’ drive north of Seattle.
- Olympic Peninsula: a two to three day self-drive loop.
- Leavenworth: about 2.5 hours from SeaTac, best with a night in town.
- Mount Rainier: a long single day, or an overnight at the park.
Crossing into Canada
US-bound passengers on the Vancouver train now clear US preclearance at Pacific Central Station, in place since 8 June 2026. You will need a passport to cross, so this is not something to attempt as a spur-of-the-moment day out. WSDOT explains the change on its news page .
Heading south to Portland
Most travelers take the train. New Amtrak Cascades trainsets began service on 30 September 2026, and secondary listings show fares from about $29. Check the Amtrak Cascades site for the price on your date, then plan at least one night in Oregon.
The San Juan Islands
Washington State Ferries run from Anacortes. A 2026 report quoted a passenger fare near $18, but fares are not confirmed, so check before budgeting. Treat the islands as an overnight and book ahead in summer.
The Olympic Peninsula loop
Allow two to three days. Getting from Seattle to Hurricane Ridge takes about 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way once you add the ferry and the drive through Port Angeles, which is why a same-day return is unrealistic. Entry to Olympic National Park is $30 per vehicle, and the entrance station does not take cash. At Hurricane Ridge the Day Lodge was lost to fire on 7 May 2023, so only temporary trailers stand there, and as of 17 October 2026 the ridge has no drinking water. Winter access is Friday to Sunday and holiday Mondays when weather allows, and tire chains are required. The Hoh Rain Forest visitor center is open Friday to Sunday, and summer visitors should arrive before 8 a.m. Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort and Lake Crescent Lodge were open as of mid-October alerts. The Olympic conditions page carries live alerts. To compare rooms in the area, try Port Angeles hotels .
Leavenworth and Mount Rainier overnights
Leavenworth’s Christmas lighting is reported for 27 November to 24 December 2026. The town’s alpine look dates from a 1960s economic revival. At Mount Rainier, Paradise stays open in winter for snowshoeing, although the Longmire to Paradise road closes at night from 1 November. Weather shifts fast at that elevation, so pack warm layers.
Tips for planning
Lock in train and ferry times first and hotels second. Treat Puget Sound as cold water in every season and leave swimming to warmer places.
