Northern Isles Day Trips Beyond Árnafjørður
Árnafjørður has a church, a fjord and a trailhead, but no cafe, shop or beds. Plan your day trips from Klaksvík, which is a 10 minute drive from the village, and treat Árnafjørður as one stop on a longer loop. Journey times between the stops below vary with weather, so build in slack.
A loop from Klaksvík
Take route 70 north out of Klaksvík. The new Árnafjarðartunnilin, about 1.96 km long, brings you to the village. Pause at the viewpoint pull-off between that tunnel and the Hvannasundstunnilin (about 2.25 km), where the two are about 500 m apart. After the second tunnel, the road runs on to Hvannasund and Norðdepil, about 8 km on. Neither is a subsea tunnel. Tolls on the subsea tunnels elsewhere in the islands are listed at tunnil.fo.
Option 1: the northern villages
Hvannasund is the port for the ferry to Svínoy and Fugloy, so check ssl.fo for sailing times. Viðareiði lies further north and is the northernmost village. Hikers go there for Villingadalsfjall, which charges DKK 200 at the gate, and for Enniberg, which needs a guide. Bus 500 from Klaksvík calls at Hvannasund and Viðareiði. Some departures run only if you phone an hour ahead.
Option 2: Kalsoy
From Klaksvík, the route 56 ferry reaches Syðradalur in about 20 minutes. The boat is small, with room for about 12 cars, and advance booking is available. Check ssl.fo for the current fare. Bus 506 meets the ferry. On the island, Kallur Lighthouse is a hike with a DKK 200 fee for adults, DKK 100 for ages 13 to 17 and free entry under 13, payable by card. The Kópakonan statue stands at Mikladalur.
Option 3: Kunoy
Kunoy has a road connection through Haraldssund, and bus 504 runs from Klaksvík.
Option 4: the hikes at home
If you want to spend the day on foot near the village, choose one of the two routes. The Klaksvík to Árnafjørður walk is 5 km one way with 395 m of climbing, and the Katlarnir loop is 7 km with 653 m. Both are rated difficult. See the walking page for the full notes.
Klaksvík in the evening
Klaksvík is the place to eat, shop for supplies and see its own sights. The Christianskirkjan dates from 1963 and follows an Old Norse style. The museum is Norðoya Fornminnissavn. The Föroya Bjór brewery has operated since 1888, and visitors report tours with a tasting. The swimming hall offers a 25 m pool, a slide and a wellness area. Hours vary, so look up current times.
Planning notes
- Fill your bottle and buy lunch in Klaksvík before heading out.
- Be back from the hillside before dark.
- In fog, drive slowly and expect sheep on the road.
- Call 112 if you need help.
