Planning a Multi-Day Stay in Punta del Este
A stay of several days works best when you pick a home base and make short trips from it. The coast east and west of the peninsula has five areas, each with a different pace.
Where to base yourself
| Area | What it offers |
|---|---|
| The peninsula (La Punta) | Port, lighthouse, Avenida Gorlero and both beaches |
| Punta Ballena | Casapueblo, about 13 km west |
| La Barra and Manantiales | East of the La Barra bridge; MACA is on Ruta 104 at km 4.5 |
| José Ignacio | Fishing village turned resort with a lighthouse and beach restaurants |
| Garzón | Inland village, Bodega Garzón and the Laguna Garzón bridge |
Getting to the coast
Fly into Carrasco International Airport (MVD) in Montevideo, which works all year. Laguna del Sauce airport (PDP) has seasonal flights. From Montevideo’s Tres Cruces terminal, COT and Copsa coaches reach the Punta del Este terminal every 20 to 60 minutes, and the ride takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. The peninsula lies about 130 km east of the capital. Once you are here, you can use local taxis or hire a car; the COT site lists coach services.
Suggested use of the days
- Days 1 and 2: the peninsula and Playa Mansa, with an optional boat to Isla Gorriti (about 15 minutes from the port).
- Day 3: Casapueblo, then the sunset ceremony. Museum admission is UYU 600, and the site recommends arriving 40 minutes ahead of sunset.
- Day 4: La Barra and Manantiales for MACA (free, Wednesday to Monday), then José Ignacio.
- Day 5: Bodega Garzón. Menus run UYU 3,900 to UYU 5,000 per person, and you reserve 24 hours ahead.
Costs at a glance
Prices here are in Uruguayan pesos (UYU). Casapueblo costs UYU 600 for adults, UYU 500 for residents and visitors over 65, and nothing for children under 12. MACA and Museo Ralli are free. Bodega Garzón menus cost UYU 3,900 or UYU 5,000 per person. A tip of about 10 percent is customary in restaurants.
Checks in the cooler months
Between March and November, many beach clubs, restaurants and some museums open on fewer days. Museo Ralli shows weekend-only hours in April, May, October and November, and MACA closes on Tuesdays. Lifeguards work only a season (in 2025-26, 14 November to 5 April), so do not count on a staffed beach outside it.
