Churches Museums and Ruins of Nessebar
The Old Town of Nessebar covers 27.1 ha on a rocky peninsula and appears on the UNESCO World Heritage List as no. 217, added in 1983. Its churches range from Early Christian ruins to a church of 1609, and about 40 survive wholly or partly. This guide sorts the sights by whether you pay, whether they are free, and whether they are closed. Prices are in euros and approximate.

The best two interiors
The Archaeological Museum shows Greek ceramics and Thracian gold. St Stephen is the church to see for painted walls, with scenes dated 1599 covering the interior. Together they cost about 7.67 euros for an adult.
Smaller churches
St Saviour sits partly below the present street level and has wall paintings. St Paraskeva and St John the Baptist are small, and both close for lunch in high season. The Ethnographic Museum shows a revival merchant house in the Moskoyani House area.
Free ruins and walls
St Sophia, also called the Old Bishopric, is a large ruined basilica. St John Aliturgetos stands on the southern cliff in red and white masonry. A legend says it was never consecrated after a builder fell, and you should treat it as a legend. The Eleusa basilica, the western walls and gate and the early Byzantine baths can all be viewed without a ticket.
Closed churches
Christ Pantocrator and the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel have been closed for major conservation since 2022. Only the outside of Pantocrator can be seen, from beyond the fence, and it is known for its brick and ceramic decoration of the 13th to 14th century.
