Åndalsnes Viewpoints, Mountains and Landmarks
This guide arranges the sights by distance from the centre of Åndalsnes, beginning with those you can walk to and ending with the places that need a car. Money amounts are in Norwegian krone (NOK).
In town
Romsdalsgondolen and Nesaksla. The gondola station faces the railway station across the street. It climbs to 708 m in about 5 to 7 minutes and the view takes in the fjord, the river and the peaks around town. Adults pay roughly NOK 460 to 625 for a return, depending on the season. Hours vary by date, so check romsdalen.no .
Rampestreken. A steel viewing platform at 537 m on the slope of Nesaksla. Reach it on foot from the gondola top in about 15 minutes, or climb from town by the Romsdalstrappa stone steps in about 1.5 hours. It is open year-round. Queues are common in summer. From the platform, the summit of Nesaksla is 15 to 30 minutes further.
Norsk Tindesenter. Havnegata 2. Norsk Tindemuseum, a 60-route climbing wall, a shop and the Tindestua restaurant share the building, and it doubles as the Reinheimen National Park visitor centre. Entry starts at about NOK 90.
Along the Rauma Line
Kylling Bridge. This stone arch spans 76 m and rises 59 m above the river. It dates from the 1920s, as the line opened in 1924. The film Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning used the Rauma Line for a train sequence. Summer tourist trains cross it. The line itself runs 114 km to Dombås, with regular trains taking about 1 hour 17 minutes.
Up Romsdalen
Trollveggen. The wall is Europe’s tallest vertical rock face at roughly 1,000 m. Trollveggen Besøkssenter at Horgheimseidet, on the E136, screens a 14-minute film and has a cafeteria and shop. Its season is summer, so confirm dates before the drive. BASE jumping off the wall has been illegal since 25 July 1986.
By road from town
Trollstigen. Fv 63 winds up through 11 hairpin bends to a plateau at about 700 m, with the Stigfossen waterfall falling about 320 m alongside. King Haakon VII opened the road on 31 July 1936, after eight years of construction. It is shut every winter and normally runs from mid-May to October or November. Check vegvesen.no before you set out. If the hairpins are closed, drive to the plateau viewpoints from the Valldal side instead.
Rødven Stave Church. About 34 km from Åndalsnes by Rv64, with a construction date of around 1300. It is owned by Fortidsminneforeningen. Guided visits take place in the summer. For hours go to stavechurch.com .
Tips
- Carry warm and waterproof clothing to every viewpoint, because the weather changes fast.
- Look at the Vegvesen road status on the morning of any Trollstigen drive.
- Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere.
