Morning: Tortuga Bay

Leave early, because visiting hours start at about 06:00 and the path is a paved 2.5 km. Sign in at the booth by the trailhead and allow 30 to 45 minutes each way. The first beach, Playa Brava, is a surf beach with strong rip currents, so walk its sand and keep out of the water. Keep going for about 20 minutes to Playa Mansa. This sheltered bay is the place to swim, snorkel or share a kayak.

A water taxi from the pier takes you there and back for about USD 10 each way if you prefer to save the walk.

Afternoon: a quiet beach or a boat

For a calmer afternoon, take the short water taxi to Playa de los Alemanes. It is free to enjoy. From there you can walk 15 to 20 minutes to Las Grietas and visit with a guide for about USD 10 each, in about 1.5 hours.

A longer retreat in the highlands

For a change of pace, spend a night or two in a highland lodge near Santa Rosa. Reserves at El Chato and Rancho Primicias are on the same road, where you can walk among wild tortoises on the paths and through a lava tunnel for about USD 10 each with a guide.   • Drones and professional filming need park permission arranged about two months ahead.
  • The park can close Tortuga Bay at short notice when the sea is rough.
