Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae Day Trips
The towns around Vesuvius hold several archaeological sites that are easy to combine with a visit to Pompeii or to reach from Naples. This page lists them with entry details in euros. Opening times change, so confirm each one on the official page before leaving.
Getting there
The Circumvesuviana, run by EAV, links Napoli Garibaldi with Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri on the Sorrento line in about 30 to 40 minutes. Fares are around EUR 3.30 for a single journey, and EAV publishes the current timetable. Take care with station names: Pompei Santuario is another Circumvesuviana stop, and Pompei is a Trenitalia station on the Naples to Salerno line. Visitors coming from Rome should change at Naples.
Herculaneum (Ercolano Scavi)
Herculaneum is a compact site with a station of its own. The Circumvesuviana ride to Ercolano Scavi takes about 20 minutes. The full price is EUR 16, ages 18 to 25 pay EUR 2 and under 18s are free. The only closing day is 25 December. In summer, from 16 March to 14 October, the hours are 08:30 to 19:30 with last entry at 18:00. In winter they are 08:30 to 17:00 with last entry at 15:30. Free days are the first Sunday of the month, 25 April, 2 June and 4 November, and free tickets are handed out at the office, with no online booking. The Villa dei Papiri is closed with no date set for reopening. Details are on the Herculaneum site .
Stabiae
Stabiae has two villas, Villa Arianna and Villa San Marco, and entry is free. The Stabiae museum charges EUR 8. The 3 day Pompeii ticket includes the museum and both villas.
Oplontis and Boscoreale
Each of these costs EUR 8 and each closes on Tuesdays. Oplontis, at Torre Annunziata, is the location of Villa Poppea. Boscoreale holds the Villa Regina and an Antiquarium, which keep winter hours of 09:00 to 17:00.
Vesuvius Gran Cono
The Gran Cono is a guided walk on Path No. 5. The ticket is EUR 10 for adults, or EUR 11.68 once fees are added, and EUR 8 for under 25s with ID, residents of the 13 park communes and school groups. Children under 6 go free with an adult. Only the authorised seller, Vesuvio Park on Vivaticket , sells tickets. There are 50 places in each 10 minute slot, and a few last minute tickets go on sale 30 minutes ahead through the wifi at the entrance. The Vesuvio Express bus from Ercolano Scavi station takes about 30 minutes to the start of the path. Check the park information for monthly hours and closure notices, because the path shuts automatically in orange weather alerts.
Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei are monitored active volcanoes under Italian emergency plans, and the FCDO and US State Department pages carry current advice.
