Romance in Paphos: Sea, Wine and Sunset Views
Paphos is the coast where, in the legend, Aphrodite came ashore, so couples tend to plan around the sea and the evening light. This page runs through a romantic day in order. Prices are 2026 euro figures.
Morning: the water
Take a Blue Lagoon cruise from Latchi, about 40 km north of Paphos. The trip lasts roughly 2.5 to 3 hours and adult fares begin around EUR 20. Nafsika II is one of the listed cruise boats, and glass-bottom trips also run from Latchi. Going by boat avoids the Akamas dirt track, which is steep and unpaved and which standard rental insurance excludes.
If you prefer sand to sea, Coral Bay has a sheltered beach, about 12 km north-west of Kato Paphos on route 615. The seabed is rock and sea grass, so expect clear water rather than a coral reef.
Afternoon: wine and a village
Drive inland to Kathikas, a stone village, and book a tasting at Vasilikon Winery. The white grape Xynisteri and the red Maratheftiko are the local specialities. Opening hours and tasting fees are set by the winery, so ask ahead. Vouni Panayia Winery, at Pano Panayia, lies on the second official wine route.
Evening: sunset and dinner
For sunset, go to Petra tou Romiou, on the south-east coast near Kouklia. It is a viewing spot for the rock and the legend. Do not swim there: drownings have been reported and no lifeguard service should be assumed. In Kato Paphos, the harbour is lit at night and the quay is lined with fish restaurants. Afterwards, walk to Paphos Castle. The castle ticket is EUR 2.50, and the Department of Antiquities lists its hours.
On the coast at Peyia, the sea caves face the sunset. Keep back from the cliffs, and look at the Edro III wreck from the shore only.
Where to stay
Several seafront hotels sit on the Kato Paphos promenade: the Elysium on Tombs of the Kings Avenue, and the Annabelle and the Almyra on Poseidonos Avenue.
Aphrodite Festival
Every September the Pafos Aphrodite Festival puts opera on at Castle Square. The 24th edition took place on 4 and 5 September 2026 with L’Elisir d’Amore, with tickets from about EUR 35 to EUR 150. La Traviata played in 2024 and Carmen in 2025. No 2027 programme is out yet.
Leave these for another trip
- Tombs of the Kings, which are tombs and not a romantic walk.
- Avakas Gorge, which is closed to visitors after rescues of trapped hikers.
- Lara beach at night. It is a protected nesting beach with a night ban in season.
