Åndalsnes with Kids
Families visiting Åndalsnes can fit most plans to the age of the children. Younger ones are well served by the gondola, the climbing centre and the train, while teenagers can try a graded via ferrata. All prices are in Norwegian krone (NOK).
Young children
Bouldering at Norsk Tindesenter. The centre at Havnegata 2 has a children’s bouldering area for ages 3 and up, a 60-route climbing wall and Norsk Tindemuseum. Entry is from about NOK 90. A restaurant, Tindestua, and a shop are inside, which makes it a good stop in rain.
Gondola ride. Romsdalsgondolen takes about 5 to 7 minutes to rise to 708 m, and the official listing describes it as accessible. For ages 6 to 17, return fares run from about NOK 315 to 335 depending on season, while adults pay roughly NOK 460 to 625. Opening hours change by date, and romsdalen.no has the schedule.
Train to Dombås. The Rauma Line is a comfortable outing, taking about 1 hour 17 minutes along the 114 km route. Four trains each way run daily all year. The summer tourist trains cross the 76 m Kylling Bridge.
School-age children
Trollveggen visitor centre. A 14-minute film plays at Horgheimseidet beside the E136. Children can also have a snack in the cafeteria. It is a summer attraction, so check before you set out.
Rampestreken. From the upper gondola station the path to the viewpoint takes about 15 minutes. The platform is steel and projects out at 537 m, so hold hands and stay away from the edge. Summer queues are normal, and ice or snow on the path can make it slippery.
Teenagers
Introveggen via ferrata. Run from Norsk Tindesenter, this grade B route lasts 3 to 4 hours and takes children aged 12 and above. Adults need to be comfortable with heights too. The season is about 1 June to 20 October, and a guide is recommended. The harder Vestveggen route is limited to ages 16 and up.
Not for children
The Romsdalseggen ridge is demanding, with scrambling and exposed stretches, 970 m of ascent and 5 to 8 hours of walking. Leave it for adults and experienced older teenagers.
Packing and planning
- Bring waterproof layers and warm clothes, because the mountain weather turns cold quickly.
- Look at gondola hours before you plan an evening ride.
