Half-Day Cultural Tours of Nouakchott
Advisory, October 2026: Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel in Mauritania, and the UK FCDO has no warning for Nouakchott but advises against travel to the east and the Mali border area. Tours that stay in the capital are the simplest to plan; see Canada’s advice .
Guided visits in Nouakchott are arranged privately, since the city has no sightseeing buses. A driver and guide come as a package, usually through a hotel or guesthouse. The route below fits a half-day and is easy to adjust.
A sample route
- Museum first. The National Museum, near Hotel Marhaba, opens the story of the Sahara’s trade towns. Plan 45 to 60 minutes. Fees and hours vary by source, so check them locally.
- Craft cooperatives in Ksar. Watch silver, copper and leather being made, and women’s cooperatives selling mats and embroidered cushions.
- Camel market. This is a morning stop. A guide who speaks Hassaniya Arabic helps with the bargaining that goes on around the animals.
- Port de Pêche. Time it for the boats coming in at around 16:30.
Pricing questions to ask
Each guide sets a rate, so ask a few direct questions: what is included, whether the vehicle is private, how long the driver waits, and whether the price is in euros or ouguiya (MRU). Pay in cash and agree the total before you set off.
What to eat
A tour that includes lunch might offer these dishes:
- Thieboudienne: seasoned fish with broken rice, cassava, carrots and tamarind, the national dish.
- Grilled camel steak or mechoui, served with rice or couscous.
- Zrig, a chilled drink of camel or goat milk whipped with water and sugar.
Cafes in Tevragh-Zeina such as Pâtisserie Charlotte and Pizza 2.8 on Avenue Charles de Gaulle suit a lighter stop.
Tea etiquette
Tea is a ritual in three glasses: the first is bitter, the second sweet and the third gentle, as the saying goes. It is brewed over charcoal with mint and sugar and poured from a height. Refusing a glass offered by a host or craftsman is impolite.
Arrival checklist
- The e-visa is required and must be printed. Apply through ANRPTS , and pay the fee on arrival in exact cash, euros or dollars.
- Passports need six months of validity.
- Alcohol is not sold, and dress is conservative.
