Day Trips from Ohrid: Struga, Vevcani, Galicica
The day trips around Ohrid are short, so you can often combine two in one outing. They are listed here from nearest to farthest by road. Fees are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro, and are best treated as rough guides.
Struga, about 14 km northwest
Struga is a lakeside town where the Black Drim flows out of Lake Ohrid, with a bridge over the outflow. Poetry Evenings are held there in late summer.
Vevcani, about 20 to 25 km
Vevcani is a village known for its springs. It lies about 14 km from Struga and roughly 20 to 25 km from Ohrid, so it pairs with Struga in one outing. Entry to the springs is about 50 MKD, and some listings show it as free. The village’s carnival falls on 13 and 14 January.
Galicica National Park
The park road runs over the ridge that divides Lake Ohrid from Lake Prespa. Viewpoints near the Pretor and Magaro pass look down on both lakes. Park fees are about 200 MKD per person for stays, with a small vehicle charge for just driving through. The Prespa side has no staffed booth, so bring cash.
Bay of Bones, about 14 to 16 km south
A reconstructed Bronze Age pile dwelling stands over the water here, with a Roman-period fortress and an indoor museum ashore. Entry is about 100 to 150 MKD.
St Naum, 29 km south
The monastery dates to 905 and is a working one. Around it are the Black Drim springs, a beach with changing shacks and peacocks in the grounds. The church costs about 100 MKD, and the springs rowboat about 600 MKD per boat. The Albanian border is about 1 km away. A boat from the Ohrid pier takes about 90 minutes each way, and the public bus about an hour. Sailing Stone Travel has the boat schedule.
Why Skopje is not a day trip
Skopje lies about 170 km away, which is 3 to 3.5 hours by bus each way. Bus fares are about 460 to 490 MKD one way on aggregator sites. Squeezing both legs into one day leaves almost no time in the city, so plan an overnight. Operators use different stations in Ohrid, so confirm where your bus leaves.
Tips
Hours are shorter from October to March, so start early in autumn and winter. Check site hours on Tourism Attractions before you set out.
