Quiet Romance in Nouakchott for Couples
Advisory, October 2026: The UK FCDO has no warning for Nouakchott, while the US State Department rates Mauritania Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and Canada advises avoiding unpatrolled beaches and the Cinquième district after dark. Current detail is on the FCDO page .
This is a capital of sand and Islamic law, and the options for couples are modest. There are no luxury resorts, no cocktail bars and no nightlife. What is on offer is slow and quiet: sunset over the Atlantic, tea, good food and art. Plan accordingly, and you will have a calm few days.
Rules that shape the trip
- Hand-holding, kissing and other public affection are taboo and can bring police questions.
- Unmarried Mauritanian couples cannot share a hotel room, and unmarried foreign couples should be discreet.
- Alcohol is illegal everywhere. There are no bars or liquor shops.
- Dress modestly: men avoid shorts, and women cover shoulders, arms and legs.
Sunset on the dunes
Ask a hotel or local agency to book a private 4x4 and driver for the late afternoon. The drive ends in the dunes, where the driver spreads nomadic carpets and brews ataye over charcoal. The three glasses are bitter, sweet and gentle, as the saying goes. Agree the price in advance and be back before dark. Let your driver pick the dune, since Canada warns about banditry and carjacking on unpatrolled beaches.
A courtyard dinner
Tevragh-Zeina has the most comfortable restaurants. Restaurant Le Prince is a long-running place for Lebanese grills and pastries, and some city hotels have terraces serving grilled seafood. Dinner is accompanied by mint tea or fruit juice. Payment is usually cash.
An afternoon at Galerie Zeinart
Galerie Zeinart at Ilot C in Tevragh-Zeina is an art space with a garden, founded by Isabel Fiadeiro. It shows contemporary Mauritanian painting, sculpture and jewellery. The gallery site lists exhibitions.
The water is not for swimming
Port de Pêche and Nouakchott’s open beaches have strong undertow and people drown each year. Watching the boats land from the sand in the late afternoon is the safe way to enjoy the sea, and sunbathing in swimwear is not accepted in town.
Slower: Banc d’Arguin
A longer trip for two is the UNESCO park to the north, where Imraguen fishermen sail wooden boats over shallow banks full of birds. It takes a 4x4 and two or three days, with entry paid at the park offices and a local guide. Plan for October to March.
