Easy Day Trips Near Port Louis
The easiest day trips from the capital lie north or in the central highlands, within about 15 to 30 minutes by car or taxi. The distances are approximate and depend on traffic.
Pamplemousses: garden and sugar museum
Pamplemousses is the standout short trip because two attractions stand side by side.
- SSR Botanical Garden. Look for giant Victoria water lilies, giant tortoises and spice trees. The garden opens about 08:30 and closes about 17:30 every day. Foreign visitors pay around Rs 300 per most sources, so confirm at the gate. Free days on Sundays and public holidays are for Mauritian citizens. A gate guide costs about Rs 100.
- L’Aventure du Sucre. The sugar museum in Beau Plan gives adults a Rs 1,200 ticket and children aged 6 to 13 a Rs 600 one, with tastings included. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 16:00.
For public transport, buses to Pamplemousses and the north start at the northern bus station near Immigration Square. Fares and bus numbers change, so ask at the station.
Mapou, Moka and Triolet
- Chateau de Labourdonnais, Mapou. Ask the estate for current hours and ticket prices.
- Maison Eureka, Moka. The 19th century Creole house has a restaurant. Entry is about EUR 8 to 10 per most guides and Sunday opening varies, so check before you go.
- Maheswarnath Mandir, Triolet. The large Hindu temple expects modest dress and shoes off at the door.
Journeys that fill a whole day
| Destination | Distance from Port Louis |
|---|---|
| Chamarel and the Seven Coloured Earths | about 45 to 55 km, 1.5 hours or more each way |
| Black River Gorges | about 45 to 55 km, 1.5 hours or more each way |
| Le Morne | about 50 km, one to 1.5 hours by road |
| Ile aux Cerfs | east coast, a full day |
Pick one of these per day. Doubling up leaves too little time on the ground.
Le Morne is a UNESCO site of maroon history, remembered as a refuge for escaped slaves, so visit it quietly.
Dolphin trips
Wild dolphin boats leave from Tamarin and Black River on the west coast, a long day from the capital. Choose a permitted operator who keeps the boat at a distance. Do not book a swim with the pod, because swimmers dropped on resting dolphins disturb them.
Weather and safety
- Cyclones can hit between about November and May. During a cyclone you cannot leave your lodging.
- Hiking in or after heavy rain is dangerous because of landslides.
- Read your government’s travel advisory before departure.
