Ohrid for Couples: Sunsets, Boats and Dinner
Romance in Ohrid comes from the setting, since few formal experiences are built for couples. Think of an evening at the water, a boat out to the southern shore and one good souvenir. Prices are in Macedonian denars (MKD), at about 61.5 MKD to the euro, and boats sometimes quote euros.
An evening at Kaneo
Start with the sunset at the Kaneo viewpoint above the lake. The viewpoint and grounds charge nothing. Dinner follows by the water.
Two names appear in guides. Kaneo Letna Bavca and Restaurant is at Kocho Racin 43 and has been family-run since 1993. Kaj Kanevche is a pier-side place at Kaneo. Check opening times for either before you set out. When you order fish, ask where it comes from. Ohrid trout is protected and overfished, while brown trout is a fine alternative.
By boat
The standard boat to St Naum is shared and costs about EUR 10 round trip on large boats. A small exclusive boat costs about EUR 20 on the same run. Boats leave the main pier at about 10:00, the crossing is about 90 minutes each way, and the return is at about 15:30 or 16:00. Read the details at Sailing Stone Travel .
At St Naum, a rowboat on the Black Drim springs costs about 600 MKD for the boat and lasts about 30 minutes. The monastery next door is a working one, so keep voices low if you step inside.
A pearl to remember it by
The Ohrid pearl is the keepsake that fits. Only the Talev and Filev families are widely reported to hold the method, and both keep shops in the Old Town. Ask where a piece was made. A summer swim
From about late June to mid-September, surface water runs about 22 to 24 C in July and August. Gradiste, Labino and the beach beside St Naum are the usual places. Stones and steep drop-offs mean you should stay where you can stand, as most free beaches lack a reliable lifeguard.
How much to plan
Two nights cover the sunset, the boat and a pearl shop visit with room to spare. Formal romantic packages are few, so leave gaps in the schedule.
