Planning a Niagara Falls Stay of 2 to 7 Days
How long you need at Niagara Falls depends on how much you want beyond the falls themselves. The cataracts, a boat ride and a tunnel walk on both sides fit into two full days. Add Niagara-on-the-Lake, Fort George and a gorge hike and you are at three or four days. Beyond five days, the falls become a base for Buffalo and Toronto.
Choose by length
| Days | What fits |
|---|---|
| 2 | State park, boat, Cave of the Winds, Journey Behind the Falls |
| 3 | Add Niagara-on-the-Lake, Fort George and icewine |
| 4 | Add the gorge trails and Old Fort Niagara |
| 5 to 7 | Add Toronto by train and Buffalo museums |
A three-day plan
Day 1 in New York (USD). Start on foot in Niagara Falls State Park and ride the Maid of the Mist if the season is open, which in 2026 means April 24 to November 8. Go down to the Hurricane Deck at Cave of the Winds. After lunch, hike the trails at Whirlpool State Park. Watch the sunset from Terrapin Point on Goat Island.
Day 2 in Ontario (CAD). Walk across Rainbow Bridge with your passport. Follow the Queen Victoria Park promenade, then visit Journey Behind the Falls and the Power Station tunnel, each $33 CAD for adults. Late in the afternoon, ride the Whirlpool Aero Car. After dinner in a Fallsview restaurant, see the illuminated falls and, in summer, the 10:00 pm fireworks.
Day 3 around the region. Drive 20 km north to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Walk Queen Street, tour Fort George, then taste icewine at Inniskillin and Peller Estates. On the way back, stop at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown, New York.
Stretching to a week
- Two days on the falls, then a day of wine and a Shaw Festival play (the season runs April to December).
- Two days in Toronto after a GO Transit train ride of about 2 hours to Union Station, with the CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, St. Lawrence Market and the Toronto Islands.
- Two days in Buffalo for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Canalside and Allentown restaurants.
What changes by season
Summer brings the boats, nightly fireworks and the longest days. From early November the boats stop, Cave of the Winds uses a $14 winter adult price until March 31, 2027, and its Hurricane Deck is taken down until spring. In mid November the Winter Festival of Lights starts up. Journey Behind the Falls is open all year, with a redevelopment in 2027 and 2028 that keeps the attraction running.
Moving around
- US side: Amtrak runs to Niagara Falls station, and a trolley loops the state park until late November.
- Canadian side: WEGO buses run year-round, with a 24 hour pass at $16 CAD for adults and $12 CAD for children, or $20 CAD and $16 CAD for 48 hours. There is no WEGO service to the US side.
- Airports: Buffalo Niagara (about 40 km) and Toronto Pearson (about 125 km).
