A Self Guided Loop Around Old Nessebar
A self guided walk is the standard way to see Old Nessebar. A loop with several entries takes 2 to 3 hours. This page gives a route with a rough time plan, then practical points on getting there and what to wear. Prices are in euros and approximate.
Route with a time plan

What you will see along the way
The loop begins at the wooden windmill and the western walls. Past the gate, the museum introduces the town’s Greek and Thracian past. The lanes beyond hold revival merchant houses, including the one used by the Ethnographic Museum. At St Sophia, the ruined basilica from the 5th to 6th century gives a sense of the Early Christian town. St Stephen has the best painted interior on the route. The final stop, Aliturgetos, is a 14th century church of red and white masonry. A local legend says it was left unconsecrated after a builder fell, and it is best told as a legend.
Christ Pantocrator is not part of the loop, because it has been closed for conservation since 2022. Its brick and ceramic exterior can be seen from outside the fence.
Getting to the start
- By bus: line 1 from Sunny Beach runs every 10 to 20 minutes on the summer schedule from early June, takes about 15 minutes and costs about 1 euro in cash.
- By car: the peninsula is closed to ordinary traffic. Park at Parking North on Kraybrezhna Street, about 1.50 euros per hour or about 7.50 euros for 24 hours, and walk in. A permit to drive in must be arranged in advance through your accommodation.
- By train: Nessebar has no railway station, and Burgas is the nearest. A road-going tourist train costs about 2 to 3 euros.
Underfoot and overhead
Cobbles are slippery when wet, so wear flat shoes. Small churches close for lunch around 14:00 to 14:30 in high season, so reorder the stops if you arrive at midday. From mid-October to March, small churches open by arrangement, the museum and St Stephen close at about 17:00, and the loop shrinks to the free ruins and exteriors.
