Pomoravlje District Sights and Landmarks
The landmarks of Pomoravlje District fall into three groups: medieval monasteries, protected nature in the hills and a few sites of industry and archaeology. Several are places of worship, so a quiet, respectful approach is expected. Costs are in Serbian dinars (RSD).
Monasteries of the Morava school
Manasija
Despot Stefan Lazarević built Manasija between 1406 and 1418, 2 km northwest of Despotovac. A ring of towers and walls encloses the church, and the frescoes inside belong to the Morava school. The ramparts are being restored, with completion due by 2027, so some sections may be closed off.
Ravanica
Ravanica, in the village of Senje, was endowed by Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović, and he is buried in its church. The church dates from the 1370s, and the prince’s relics returned in 1989. Senje is about 10 to 12 km from Ćuprija town.
Kalenić
Kalenić is in Rekovac municipality. Respect the same conventions as at the other two monasteries.
Visiting etiquette
All three are active monastic communities. Cover shoulders and knees, ask before using a camera inside a church and keep your voice down. Women often cover their heads in the church, although that is a custom, not a rule.
Natural monuments
Lisine. About 20 km east of Despotovac, Lisine has first-category protection. The Veliki Buk waterfall, about 20 m high, is fed by the Veliko Vrelo spring beneath Beljanica. Stay on the paths.
Vrelo Grze. This third-category natural monument lies on the Grza river, and the Paraćin Tourist Organisation manages it. It is roughly 15 to 25 km from Paraćin.
Resava Cave. The cave was found in 1962 and opened to the public on 22 April 1972. Guided tours run from 08:30 every 45 minutes, and adults pay 700 RSD. See the operator’s site .
Industry and archaeology
The Senjski Rudnik mining museum in Senje opened on 1 May 1982 and has a steam engine from 1874, workshops and Aleksandar’s adit. In Ćuprija town, the Late Roman fort of Horreum Margi lies largely inside a military barracks and is not open as a visitor attraction.
Jagodina
Jagodina’s main landmark is the Museum of Naive and Marginal Art on Boška Đuričića 10. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00 from Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00 on Saturday and 10:00 to 15:00 on Sunday. Details are on the museum site .
Getting there
Jagodina is the best base, on the E75/A1 motorway. Despotovac, Manasija and the cave need a car or a tour.
