Attraction Visits in the Everest Region
What counts as an attraction here
The Everest region offers a handful of attractions rather than a tour circuit. They are monasteries, villages and a few flights, and almost all of them lie along the trekking trails of Sagarmatha National Park. There are no buses, taxis or jeeps in the park, so each stop below is reached by walking from Lukla, or by air.
| Attraction | Where | How you reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Tengboche Monastery (Dawa Choling Gompa) | Tengboche, about 3,867 m | On foot on the Everest Base Camp trail |
| Khumjung Monastery and its Yeti scalp relic | Khumjung village | On foot from Namche Bazaar |
| Namche Bazaar heritage sites | Namche, about 3,440 m | On foot from Lukla |
| Hotel Everest View | Syangboche, about 3,880 m | On foot above Namche, or by helicopter |
| Khumbu helicopter flights | From Kathmandu | By air, with operator choice left to you |
Tengboche Monastery
The monastery has Ama Dablam behind it. Visitors are welcome and may sit in on prayers, though schedules vary through the year, so ask on the day instead of planning around a fixed hour. The festival of Mani Rimdu is staged here in the autumn, and the dates shift annually.
Khumjung and the Yeti scalp
The scalp at Khumjung Monastery is a relic that sits inside a working place of worship. It is not a museum display. Atlas Obscura describes it in an article on the Yeti scalp . Combine it with a walk through Khumjung and Khunde as an outing from Namche.
Namche Bazaar sights
Alongside the Saturday morning market, Namche has a small Sherpa museum reported above the village. Opening times are best asked about locally.
By helicopter
Flights over the Khumbu run from Kathmandu and are often used to reach Hotel Everest View. Operators and prices change, so compare more than one and read the inclusions. A flight is a sightseeing option, not a replacement for the trek to Base Camp.
Safety notes for all visits
Namche and everything above it is over 3,000 m. Take a rest day at Namche before going higher, and watch for headaches, vomiting or confusion. These signs call for descent. A licensed guide is the best protection, and national rules expect trekkers in the park to have a guide or porter. Check that Hotel Everest View is open for your dates before you plan around it.
