Couples in Punta del Este: Sunset and Dinner

For couples, the appeal of Punta del Este is a handful of evening rituals: watching the light go, eating well and finding a quiet stretch of coast. Here is how to arrange them.

The sunset ceremony at Casapueblo

Carlos Páez Vilaró began building Casapueblo in 1958 at Punta Ballena, about 13 km west of the peninsula. Each evening, at sunset, a recording of his poem plays in a ceremony at the building. The site suggests you arrive at least 40 minutes before sunset to get a place. By day, the museum is open from 10:00 until sunset, for UYU 600 per adult. The official site has current notes.

A meal at Bodega Garzón

The winery in Garzón, on Camino Arco del Sol, has Francis Mallmann as its ambassador and culinary director. It serves two menus: the Garzón at UYU 3,900 per person and the Fire at UYU 5,000 per person. Seatings begin at 12:30, and the winery asks for booking 24 hours ahead via its restaurant page . From the peninsula, allow about an hour by car.

José Ignacio

East of La Barra, the village of José Ignacio grew from fishing roots into a resort. Its lighthouse and beach restaurants, La Huella among them, suit a long afternoon together. Restaurant seasons differ, so check each one if you travel outside December to February.

Places to stay

Hotels that appear in booking listings include Fasano Las Piedras, Playa Vik José Ignacio and The Grand Hotel on Parada 10 of Playa Brava. Confirm rates and dates with each hotel, because they move with the season. Casapueblo has a hotel of its own, in addition to its museum, gallery and cafe.

Two beaches for two

  • Playa Mansa is the calm bay beach, a good place to walk at the end of the day.
  • Playa Brava has surf and rip currents. A walk along the edge is fine, but swim only in a lifeguard zone.

Getting around

Car hire or a taxi is the easiest way to chain a sunset, a dinner and a drive back. Without a car, COT and Copsa coaches link Montevideo’s Tres Cruces terminal with the Punta del Este terminal about every 20 to 60 minutes, taking roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. Timetables are on the COT site .

Timing

High season runs about December to February, with early January the busiest. Quieter months bring shorter opening hours, so book your dinners and rooms with that in mind.
