Panama Multi-Day Trips, Region by Region
Three regions outside Panama City reward the extra nights it takes to reach them properly: the Guna Yala islands, Bocas del Toro, and the Chiriquí highlands around Boquete.
Guna Yala (San Blas Islands), 2 to 3 days
A shared 4x4 leaves Panama City lodging around 05:00 and crosses the cordillera to Puerto Cartí in roughly 2.5 hours, $50-60 round trip per person. From Cartí, a motorized dugout canoe runs $20-40 round trip out to the islands. Entry to the Guna comarca costs $20-22 in tax, cash only, plus a separate $2-5 Cartí port fee, and an original passport is required at the border. Island cabañas, thatched-roof and basic, run $80-130 a night including three meals and a daily boat hop to neighboring sandbars. Snorkeling and free-diving are the water activities on offer here; the Guna Congress prohibits scuba diving throughout the comarca.
Bocas del Toro, 3 to 4 days
Air Panama connects Albrook (PAC), not Tocumen, to Isla Colón (BOC) in 50 minutes, airpanama.com , for $110-150 one way. The overland route instead runs an overnight bus from Albrook Terminal to Almirante (10 hours, about $28) plus a 30-minute water taxi to Bocas Town ($6.00). Water taxis then link Bocas Town, Isla Carenero ($1-2), and Old Bank on Isla Bastimentos ($4-5); a guided day boat covers Cayo Coral snorkeling and the Cayos Zapatilla inside Bastimentos Marine National Park for $30-40 per person plus a $10 park fee.
Boquete and the Chiriquí highlands, 3 days
A 50-minute flight from Albrook to David (DAV) runs $90-130 one way, connecting to a 45-minute taxi or bus into Boquete ($2 bus, $30 taxi); the 7-hour Albrook-David bus is the budget alternative at $15-18. A workable three-day shape: day one for Geisha coffee cupping and cloud forest hanging bridges, day two for the 9 km Sendero Los Quetzales trail to Cerro Punta ($5 park entry, worth a guide, permits set by MiAmbiente ), day three for Caldera hot springs ($3.00) and whitewater rafting on the Chiriquí Viejo. Planning your trip
Best time to visit: December to April is Panama’s dry season on the Pacific and central watershed; Bocas del Toro runs on a separate rain pattern and is actually driest in September and October.
Getting around: Domestic flights from Albrook cover the longer legs; long-distance buses from Albrook Terminal connect everywhere else, and a rental car helps only in the highlands, where public transit thins out.
The verdict

Before you go
Carry small US bills into Guna Yala; there are no ATMs anywhere in the comarca, and $50 and $100 notes are commonly refused over counterfeit concerns.
