Romantic Escapes on La Digue, Praslin and Mahe
A romantic trip here is easiest to plan by time of day. Early mornings belong to the granite beaches, midday to a boat or a long lunch, and late afternoons to rum or a quiet dinner. This page follows that rhythm across La Digue, Praslin and Mahe, with a note on sea conditions, which matter more than any view.
First light on La Digue
The postcard beach, Anse Source d’Argent, sits on La Digue and is entered through L’Union Estate. The gate opens at 06:00 and a day ticket costs SCR 150. An overnight stay on the island means you walk in before the first day boats from Praslin. Inside the reef the water is shallow and good for wading, though conditions vary, so heed any signs. The estate also has a gallery, a vanilla plantation and tortoises, and a tasting bar for Takamaka rum.
Mid-morning on Praslin
Anse Lazio is one of only three lifeguarded beaches in the country. There is no reef to break the swell, and rough water in the north-west monsoon, from December to March, brings red flags. Go before 10:00 for space on the sand, then lunch at Bonbon Plume or Le Chevalier. A main course is reported at about SCR 350 to 500.
Anse Georgette is the quieter neighbour. The public beach is reached by walking from Anse Lazio, by boat, or through the Constance Lemuria grounds, which needs permission arranged days in advance and is not guaranteed. Only a few visitors without a room at the resort are allowed each day.
Afternoon: a boat day
Moyenne Island, in Ste Anne Marine Park off Mahe, has a short loop trail, free-roaming tortoises, a chapel and old graves. Curieuse, a boat ride from Praslin, adds mangroves, tortoises and barbecue tables at SCR 150 each. A night barbecue has a base charge of SCR 1,000 plus tables. Clear-bottomed kayaks at Anse Source d’Argent are offered by one reseller for about EUR 45 for three hours. Wear life jackets on boats and stay inside snorkel zones.
Late afternoon: Takamaka rum
At La Plaine St Andre on Mahe, the Takamaka distillery runs free tours Monday to Saturday and charges SCR 175 for a tasting. It is closed on Sundays and shuts at 16:30 on the other days. A showroom and tasting bar also opened at L’Union Estate in late 2025.
Evening
For dinner on Praslin, look at Cafe des Arts at Anse Volbert and Le Chevalier at Anse Lazio. Reserve ahead during peak months. For a private beach table or a sunset cruise, ask your hotel for a written price.
Sea safety for two
Coasts take turns being dangerous: swimming on the west side is risky from roughly December to March, and on the east side from roughly May to September. Beau Vallon, Anse Lazio and Cote d’Or are the only lifeguarded beaches. Anse Cocos, Grand Anse and Petite Anse (La Digue) and Anse Intendance (Mahe) carry warning signs and are for looking, not swimming.
Etiquette and entry
Beach etiquette is conservative: topless sunbathing is rare, nudism is not tolerated, and discretion is expected. Drug laws are strict. Medical care is limited on Praslin and La Digue, so buy insurance that covers evacuation.
