Madagascar for Couples: Sunsets and Island Stays
Travel advisory: The US State Department lists Madagascar at Level 2, exercise increased caution, and gives six areas Level 3, reconsider travel, including the RN34 from Miandrivazo to Malaimbandy and the Menabe region south of Morondava. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel. It does warn of armed robbery on main roads after dark and of violent robberies on isolated beaches, including daylight attacks reported around Nosy Be, and it advises against taxi-brousse. Kidnappings are reported in Antananarivo and the towns near it. A transitional government has held power since October 2025. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov first, and confirm entry rules if you connect via Nairobi.
There is no honeymoon-resort scene in Madagascar. Couples who come are usually here for wildlife and scenery, and romance means a quiet lodge, a sunset and a lot of space. A few real options exist, and this page lists them with honest limits.
Where to stay
- Constance Tsarabanjina, Mitsio archipelago. An all-inclusive resort of 25 thatched villas on its own islet. You travel by road from Nosy Be airport, then about 90 minutes by boat, with a helicopter possible in calm weather. Rates are not given here, so ask the resort for current prices.
- Jardin Vanille and Tsara Komba, Nosy Komba. Both are small lodges of roughly 6 to 9 chalets. Their 2026 trading status is uncertain, so ask before building plans around them. Nosy Komba is home to island villages.
- Relais de la Reine and Jardin du Roy, Ranohira. These are two separate lodges near Isalo. Relais de la Reine has about 30 rooms and a pool. Check availability for both.

Sunset moments
At Isalo National Park, Madagascar National Parks lists the Window of Isalo as a sunset spot, and the Piscine Naturelle is a natural pool reached on a guided walk. Guides are required. The park also offers horse circuits, though prices are unconfirmed. The foreign adult fee is reported at 65,000 Ar, with fees expected to double from 1 November 2026. The FCDO reports attacks near Betroka and in the Ilakaka commune close to Isalo, so go in daylight and with a recognised operator. See the MNP Isalo page .
The Avenue of the Baobabs is 20 km north of Morondava, with a short free walk among enormous trees at dusk. A short drive away, two twisted baobabs called the Baobab Amoureux are said locally to be lovers. Come by air to Morondava. The road from Tana uses a Level 3 stretch, and the Menabe region south of Morondava is also Level 3.
Practical notes for couples
- Travel only in daylight and use a driver-guide for road legs.
- On Nosy Be, keep to hotel beaches, and ask staff before walking to a deserted one.
- Do not take part in village activities where lemurs are lured with bananas onto your shoulders, because it harms the animals.
- Carry ariary in cash, because cards are rarely accepted. Domestic flights are fragile, so add spare days.
What does not fit
Sacred sites such as Ambohimanga and the Rova are for respectful sightseeing, not for a romantic outing. Plan your quiet moments in lodges, on the water and in the landscape.
