Romantic Muscat for Couples: Stays and Sunsets
Travel advisory: Couples planning a trip should know that Oman has been drawn into the 2026 US-Iran conflict. The British government does not currently advise against travel to Oman, but it reports Iranian strikes and retaliation across the region since 8 July, naming Oman among the places affected, and it says a terrorist attack cannot be ruled out. The US State Department puts Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, with the Yemen border area at “Do Not Travel”. Muscat, its airport and its main attractions are open and no strike on the city is reported, though flight disruption and airspace closures are possible, so favour bookings you can change. Check gov.uk travel advice for Oman and the US travel.state.gov advisory before booking and again before you leave.
Muscat rewards couples who want calm: a beach hotel with a very long pool, a sunset on the water, a night in a desert camp, a cool plateau evening. Some local rules shape a romantic trip. Public affection is frowned upon, and sharing a hotel room is illegal unless you are married or closely related. Alcohol is limited to licensed hotels and restaurants, the minimum drinking age is 21, and public drinking is an offence. All prices are in Omani rials (OMR), with one rial worth roughly US$2.60.
Where to stay
- The Chedi Muscat. A beach hotel with a 103-metre Long Pool, a private beach of about 370 m, a Beach Restaurant and six restaurants and lounges in total. See the Chedi Muscat site .
- Hilton Muscat Al Bandar and DoubleTree by Hilton Muscat Al Waha. These two hotels are in the Barr Al Jissah resort, which Hilton has managed since 1 January 2026.
- Two to avoid for now. Al Husn is closed for renovation. Al Bustan Palace is being renovated from 1 July 2026, with its restaurants and BLU Pool closed and no reopening date announced, so leave it out of dinner or day plans.
An evening afloat
Sunset dhow cruises depart from Marina Bandar Al Rowdha or from Muttrah. Resellers list roughly US$25 to 90 per person, and the gap depends on transfers and meals, so compare what each ticket includes. The UK government lists the Gulf of Oman among waters with a higher risk of attacks on ships and warns that tourist boats can fall short of British safety standards. Ask for two life jackets before the boat leaves the dock.
A night in the dunes
Desert Nights Camp, run by Canvas Club Oman, is a luxury canvas camp in the Wahiba Sands. Sellers disagree on the rate, so request a price from the camp and ask whether it is taking guests. Bidiyah, the gateway town, is about 190 km and 2 hours from Muscat. The final 12 to 15 km over soft sand needs a 4WD and ideally a guide or a second vehicle.
Up on the Saiq Plateau
At around 2,000 m, the Saiq Plateau is the cool escape. Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar is listed by UK sellers as bookable in 2026, and Diana’s Point is its restaurant and viewpoint. Reaching the plateau means a drive of roughly 170 to 180 km, and a police checkpoint above Birkat Al Mouz sends back anything that is not a 4WD. Not every SUV is 4WD, so ask your rental company before you go.
Date night at the opera
Evenings at the Royal Opera House Muscat call for formal dress. Men wear suits or dinner jackets, and women keep shoulders covered and hemlines below the knee. Leave jeans, cargo pants, t-shirts and tennis shoes at the hotel. Doors shut 10 minutes before curtain, there is no late seating, and photos in the auditorium are banned. The box office guidelines explain the rules.
