Madagascar Activities: Lemurs, Reefs and Whales
Travel advisory: The US State Department lists Madagascar at Level 2, exercise increased caution, and marks six areas Level 3, reconsider travel. These include the RN34 from Miandrivazo to Malaimbandy and the Menabe region south of Morondava. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel, but it advises against taxi-brousse and reports armed robbery on main roads at night, attacks on isolated beaches and armed boardings on the Tsiribihina River. Kidnappings are reported in Antananarivo and the towns near it. A transitional government has held power since October 2025. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before booking, and confirm entry rules if you connect through Nairobi. Cyclones are most likely from about January to March.
Almost everything worth doing in Madagascar is outdoors, and each highlight lives in a different corner of a very large island. Choose the region first, then the activity. Here is what each one offers, with approximate costs in ariary (Ar).
At a glance
- East rainforest: indri and diademed sifaka at Andasibe, 14 lemur species at Ranomafana.
- South: canyons, pools and sunsets at Isalo.
- North-west: reef snorkelling at Nosy Tanihely, off Nosy Be.
- East coast: humpback whales at Ile Sainte-Marie, about July to September.
- West: the Tsingy limestone forest, reached through Morondava.
Andasibe (Analamazaotra National Park)
The park lies 140 km east of Antananarivo on the paved RN2. Plan 3.5 to 5 hours of driving each way and sleep nearby. About 14 lemur species live in the 874 ha reserve, including the indri, famous for its far-carrying song. All visits are guided. Madagascar National Parks (MNP) offers two easy circuits and one medium circuit of about 2 hours each, and a steep 4-hour Aventure route. The park is open every day of the year, though November to April is wetter.
Isalo National Park
Isalo is a huge sandstone landscape near Ranohira. Guides are compulsory, and the circuits include the Piscine Naturelle, canyons and the Window of Isalo viewpoint. You can also join horse circuits or a via ferrata route. Seven lemur species, including ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux’s sifakas, live in the park. Start early, because noon heat is intense.
Ranomafana National Park
At 43,550 ha, Ranomafana protects mountain rainforest between 600 and 1,200 m. Guides are always required. Foreign visitors add a 5,000 Ar commune tax to the park fee. April to November is the best time, but the park is open all year.
Nosy Tanihely marine park
A short boat ride from Nosy Be brings you to a reef with snorkelling, diving to 12 to 20 m, a lighthouse and a small interpretation centre. Turtles and reef fish are the typical sightings. Since August 2025, visits have required an online reservation, with about 300 visitors allowed per day, and operators normally arrange it along with the marine park ticket. On Nosy Be’s quieter beaches, robberies have been reported, so use hotel beaches.
Whale watching at Ile Sainte-Marie
Humpbacks use the channel between the island and the mainland from about July to September. Ask any operator how it follows responsible viewing rules, a topic the local association Cetamada works on. Boats should keep their distance from the animals.
Tsingy de Bemaraha
Via ferrata and rappel routes here suit only fit visitors with a good head for heights. Inspections of equipment are rare, according to the US State Department, so bring evacuation insurance. Fly to Morondava (about 1 hour 10 minutes). The park is reachable roughly May to October.
Lemur manners
Never hold, feed or lure a lemur. Skip any stop that sells bananas for that purpose. Follow your guide and keep your distance, and switch the flash off on night walks.
Costs and cash
Foreign adult park fees by tier: 65,000 Ar at Isalo, 55,000 Ar at Ranomafana and Bemaraha, and 45,000 Ar at Andasibe. Children from abroad pay 25,000 Ar. All fees are reported to double from 1 November 2026, so confirm with the park. Guide fees are set at each site. Take cash ariary, because cards and US dollars are rarely accepted. Anywhere outside Antananarivo, malaria prophylaxis is advised. Search for guided options on Madagascar nature activities .
