Madagascar Multi-Day Routes: South, West, Coast
Travel advisory: The US State Department lists Madagascar at Level 2, exercise increased caution. Its Level 3 areas, where it advises reconsidering travel, include the RN34 between Miandrivazo and Malaimbandy, the Menabe region south of Morondava, the RN13 from Ihosy to Betroka and the Betroka area. The UK FCDO does not advise against travel but reports gang attacks on convoys on the RN7, armed boardings on the Tsiribihina River and violent robbery on main roads after dark, and it advises against taxi-brousse. Kidnappings are reported in Antananarivo and the towns near it. Madagascar has had a transitional government since October 2025. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov , travel only in daylight with a recognised operator, and check entry rules if you connect via Nairobi. Cyclone season peaks from about January to March.
A single trip cannot cover Madagascar. Regions are linked by slow roads and unreliable internal flights, so the best plans choose one route and give it enough days. This page compares the main options.
Route comparison
| Route | Days | Best months | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andasibe overnight | 2 to 3 | May to October is driest | Road, RN2 |
| RN7 south | 8 to 10 or more | Dry season | Driver-guide and 4x4 |
| West: baobabs and Tsingy | 6 to 7 | May to October | Fly to Morondava |
| Nosy Be | Varies | Dry season | Fly |
| Sainte-Marie whales | Varies | July to September | Separate logistics |
Route 1: Andasibe overnight
Plan one night at the edge of Analamazaotra National Park. The drive from Antananarivo is 140 km and takes 3.5 to 5 hours each way. A night away avoids a 7 to 10 hour round trip in one day, and it lets you reach the indri circuits at first light. Night walks are organised by operators in community forest, not by the park, and prices vary.
Route 2: the RN7 south
The route runs Antananarivo, Antsirabe, Ranomafana, Ambalavao, Isalo, then Toliara and Ifaty, about 950 km in total. Give it 8 to 10 days or more.
- Antananarivo to Antsirabe: 170 to 187 km, 3.5 hours or more.
- Ranomafana to Isalo: roughly 350 km, 7 to 9 hours.
- Ranohira to Toliara: roughly 250 km, 7 to 8 hours on a damaged surface.
The FCDO describes the southern triangle of Ihosy, Toliara and Fort Dauphin as tense, especially after dark. Book a recognised operator, finish driving before dusk and avoid the RN13 and Betroka. Fort Dauphin is an air-only destination. Many travellers fly back to the capital from Toliara.
Route 3: the west by air
Take the roughly 1 hour 10 minute flight from Tana to Morondava. A road journey would use the RN34, including its Level 3 section. From Morondava, the Avenue of the Baobabs is 20 km north. Kirindy forest is 60 to 70 km north-east. The Tsingy is 200 km further, 8 to 12 hours by 4x4 and two ferries, with a 55,000 Ar park fee for foreign adults. Tsingy access stops in the wet months. Operators also sell a Tsiribihina river trip of roughly 3 days by motor barge, but armed boardings have been reported there, so use a recognised company if you go. Do not plan anything south of Morondava. MNP’s Tsingy page lists the circuits.
Route 4: Nosy Be and the north-west
Fly in and treat it as a separate week. Nosy Tanihely, Nosy Komba and Lokobe National Park sit within boat range. Skip village lemur-feeding stops. Stay on hotel beaches, because robberies on isolated beaches have been reported.
Route 5: Sainte-Marie
Humpback whales pass between about July and September. This island has its own logistics, so allow about 12 days if you want to combine it with the RN7.
Planning notes
Add buffer days around every domestic flight. Park fees for foreign adults run from 45,000 to 65,000 Ar, and a doubling is reported from 1 November 2026, so check rates before you pay. Pay in cash ariary. Malaria prophylaxis applies everywhere except Antananarivo. For guided packages, browse Madagascar multi-day tours .
