Romantic Lodges and Safari Camps at Udawalawe
Udawalawe offers a wildlife kind of romance, not a resort one. There is no beach, no nightlife and no spa district here. The appeal is a quiet night near the park, early starts and a jeep of your own among elephants. Because you cannot sleep inside the park, choosing the right lodge on its edge is the main decision.
Lodges and camps
Prices change by season, so check each property directly.
- Mahoora Tented Safari Camp. A tented safari camp, described as on the park’s eastern border. Operator and listing pages show private bathrooms. Ask what is included, such as meals and safaris.
- Kalu’s Hideaway. About 14 rooms and a pool, on about five acres by the reservoir, and 10 to 15 minutes from the park gate. The owner is Romesh Kaluwitharana, a former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman who played in the 1996 World Cup winning team.
- Centauria Wild. Listed within about 15 minutes of the park.
- Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort. Also listed within about 15 minutes, with an outdoor pool.
A private jeep for two
Book a jeep for just the two of you. Pricing is by the vehicle, which seats up to 6, so you pay the same as a larger party. A 3 to 4 hour drive is roughly LKR 12,000 to 16,500 (USD 40 to 55) in Sri Lankan rupees and approximate dollars, with park fees extra: USD 25 per foreign adult plus a group service charge, vehicle ticket and 18% tax. Confirm the total in writing. You stay seated with an approved guide, and elephants are very likely to appear but are never certain.
Choosing dawn or late afternoon
- Dawn: Gates open at 06:00. The air is cooler, and the light is soft.
- Late afternoon: Drives run until the park closes at 18:00, so you can stay for the last light.
When to travel
Elephants are in the park all year. The dry months, about May to September, bring herds to the reservoir shore. During heavy monsoon rain, floods and landslides can close roads, so check FCDO advice and the forecast before fixing dates.
Extend the trip
Udawalawe fits into a route of one or two nights. Tangalle, on the coast, is about 54 km and 1.5 hours away. Ella is about 100 km and 2.5 hours away.
