The most useful romantic activity in Shanghai costs nothing at all, which is easy to overlook in a city this good at selling rooftop cocktails.
Start with the free option: the Bund after dark
The Bund’s promenade stays open all night, and it doesn’t need a reservation, a dress code, or a bar tab to work: floodlit colonial facades on one side of the Huangpu, the lit Pudong skyline switching on tower by tower on the other. Arrive close to sunset and let the light fade around you rather than treating it as a five-minute photo stop on the way somewhere paid.

Outside the city center, a hand-poled wooden canopy boat drifts under red lanterns along Zhujiajiao’s stone canal walls, a quieter evening for a couple who has already done the Bund and wants the crowds thinned out. Walking Wukang Road and Anfu Road
The former French Concession’s quietest stretch runs past the 1924 Normandie Apartments and into side streets holding artisan gelato counters and small garden courtyards, best walked slowly on a weekday rather than rushed on a weekend.
