Seeing Lautoka: Mosque, Temple and Waterfront
Seeing Lautoka
The centre of Lautoka is small enough to cover in a morning by taxi or on foot. Several stops are places of worship or memory, so a quiet manner and modest clothing go a long way. Costs are in Fijian dollars (FJ$).
The Sugar Mill
At 169 Vitogo Parade, the mill dates to 1903 per the city council and is the largest employer in town. It offers no public tours. You can watch activity around the site and the port conveyors from the road. The crushing season lasts from about June to December (Lautoka City Council ).
Temple and Mosque
- Sri Krishna Kaliya Temple, 5 Tavewa Avenue: Fiji’s first ISKCON temple, with murals and sculptures. Visitors are welcome, and the Sunday feast and noon puja use separate seating for men and women. Remove shoes and cover shoulders and knees (ISKCON Lautoka ).
- Jame Masjid, 1 Mana Street: a white-marble mosque holding about 4,000 worshippers, completed in 2019. Admire it from the street, ask before going in, avoid prayer times and dress modestly.
Parks and Waterfront
- Churchill Park: Faces Vitogo Parade. The Lautoka Sugar Festival is set for 14 to 21 November 2026 on its Carnival grounds, and Fijian Drua rugby plays here among other venues.
- Marine Drive: The harbour front, best at sunset. Fins Restaurant and the Sunset Bar at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel overlook the water.
History at Saweni
The Global Girmit Institute Museum, beside the Institute’s library, opened in 2018 at Saweni. It tells of the indentured labourers brought to Fiji between 1879 and 1916. Approach it with respect, and ask the Institute about visiting hours.
Village Visit
Viseisei at Vuda Point is traditionally Fiji’s oldest settlement. Tours go with a guide, and dress is modest.
Timing Your Visit
The market is shut on Sunday, but the Sri Krishna Kaliya Temple holds its Sunday feast, so a weekend can still fill a day. From June to December the mill is crushing cane, which gives the road views some activity. The Sugar Festival fills Churchill Park for a week in November 2026. Sunset is the best hour for Marine Drive.
Dress and Conduct
Cover shoulders and knees at the temple, the mosque and in any village. Remove shoes before entering the temple. Ask permission before photographing people, and in a village remove hats and sunglasses when you meet the chief.
Getting Around
Nadi Airport is about 30 minutes away by road, and buses and taxis make frequent runs. Day trips to the Sabeto valley, Navala and Koroyanitu all start from the city.
