Sousse Attractions: Museums, Cruises and Quads
Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice for Tunisia before you reserve anything. Some border and military zones are closed to tourists, and going against FCDO advice can void travel insurance. Sousse and Port El Kantaoui are outside those zones.
Sousse’s organised attractions are few, and the best of them are inexpensive. Here is a practical rundown.
Museum and monument entry
Entry to the Ribat, the Great Mosque and the Kasbah museum is paid at the gate. The heritage agency’s older figures for non-residents were 8 TND, 5 TND and 10 TND. A new tariff started on 1 April 2026, and regional museums such as Sousse’s are reported in the 10 TND band. Pupils and students pay a 2 TND reduced rate with ID. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Licensed guides
Guides can be arranged through hotels. Ask for a licensed guide, agree a duration and price before you set off, and ask whether gate fees are included. Fee tiers are not published, so any figure you find online is only a guide.
Pirate-galleon harbour cruises
Replica galleons sail from Port El Kantaoui, about 10 km north of Sousse. Listings describe trips of two to four hours, with some heading to the Kuriat islands and stopping for a swim. Operators and prices vary between listings, so compare before you pay, and ask about life jackets for children.
Coach tours
Hotel desks sell day coaches to El Jem, Monastir, Mahdia and Kairouan, usually with entry fees extra. El Jem is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Sousse by train, so it is also easy alone.
Quad tours
Off-road quad tours cross farmland and scrub tracks. Book a licensed operator, wear a helmet and avoid riding on the beach.
Rides involving animals
Camel and horse rides are sold along the resort strip, but welfare varies. Choosing other attractions is the safer option, and captive dolphin shows are best avoided altogether.
Longer excursions
The south (Matmata, Douz, Tozeur) needs three days minimum and a licensed operator. It is not an attraction tour from Sousse.
Seasons
The galleon cruises and the busiest tours run in the warm months, while the museum and the Medina are pleasant from autumn to spring. Many people find the Medina more comfortable outside July and August, when afternoon heat is heavy and the stone lanes hold it.
Practical advice
- Use Tunisian dinars (TND) and keep exchange slips.
- Do monuments before noon in summer.
- Keep tickets and ID handy for security checks at tourist sites.
