Trakai for Couples: A Quiet Lakeside Weekend
Trakai is at its best for couples in the two hours after sunrise and the two hours before dark. The middle of the day belongs to coach parties out from Vilnius, which is the whole argument for staying the night rather than day-tripping.
Stay over, and what it costs you
The town has 5,400 residents and empties in the evening. Three lakeside properties carry most of the couples who stay: Apvalaus Stalo Klubas in town, directly across the water from the castle; TonyResort, an eco-resort in the Anupriškės pine forest about 9 km north; and Esperanza Resort and SPA, a five-star lodge on Lake Ungurys roughly 12 km west in Aukštadvaris Regional Park. Compare current rates for Trakai on Booking.com rather than assuming the in-town option is dearest, because it often is not in shoulder season.
Budget a night here against the alternative honestly: a return train from Vilnius is €1.50 to €2.00 each way and takes 30 to 35 minutes, so the room is the entire cost of the upgrade. What you buy for it is the castle without a crowd in front of it.
Timing the castle
Be on the 300 metre footbridge before 11:00 or after 16:00 in summer. Around midsummer the light lasts up to 17.5 hours, so a 21:00 walk along Karaimų Street is still golden and essentially empty. The museum inside runs 10:00 to 19:00 daily from April to September, with shorter, closed-Monday hours the rest of the year. The fortress looks untouched from the shore, though the red brick you are photographing was rebuilt between 1951 and 1962, after the castle spent nearly three centuries in ruins following the 1655 war with Muscovy.
The balloon, and when to book it
An hour over the lakes at sunrise or sunset costs roughly €150 to €220 a head, ending with a sparkling wine ceremony and a flight certificate. It is the single most expensive thing two people can do in Trakai and the one most worth the money, because there is no other way to see the castle with all 21 islands of Lake Galvė spread out behind it. Book it for your first morning, not your last: weather cancels flights regularly and an early slot leaves room to try again.
Evening on the water, while the season lasts
Narrated cruises leave the Karaimų Street piers for 30 and 60 minute circuits of the lake at roughly €5 to €10 a head, and pedal boats rent by the hour at €10 to €15. Both stop dead when the lake freezes. Open-water boating on Lake Galvė runs from spring to autumn only and is finished from around November until April, so a winter proposal on a boat is not an option here. What replaces it is skating on the lake itself, with the towers lit behind you.
Užutrakis after the day-trippers go
The 18-hectare park Édouard François André designed for Count Tiškevičius is 5 km around the lake, or about 10 minutes on a seasonal shuttle boat, and is free and open year-round. Twenty linked ponds, marble statues, formal parterres and the best view of the castle from anywhere on land. On Sunday evenings through July and August the Užutrakio vakarai chamber music series plays in the palace White Ballroom and on the lake terrace. Dinner, and what to order
Kibinai are the local dish and worth treating as the point rather than a snack: oven-baked crescents of hand-cut lamb or beef with onion, sealed with a braided seam, traditionally served with clear chicken broth or cumin tea. Senoji Kibininė at Karaimų g. 65 bakes them to the Karaim recipe recognised by Lithuania’s Culinary Heritage Fund. The Karaim are a Turkic-speaking Jewish community following Karaite Judaism, brought to Trakai from Crimea by Vytautas the Great around 1397; fewer than 200 remain in Lithuania, and this street is where their food, their timber cottages and their kenesa still stand. Cards work everywhere, including the castle ticket office and the boat piers; tipping is discretionary, with 5 to 10 percent usual for table service.

Is Trakai worth an overnight stay?
For a couple, yes, and for one specific reason: the castle is a different place at 08:00 and 20:00 than it is at noon. Day-trippers never see either. Add the free Užutrakis park in the evening and a sunrise balloon flight and two nights is comfortably filled without a single queue.
Book a room facing the water and eat late. The lakeside terraces along Karaimų Street stay open well past the last train back to Vilnius, and by then you will have the promenade almost to yourselves.
