Vancouver Date Nights: Water, Wine and Views
Vancouver’s better date nights all lean on the same two things: water and low light, whether that means a free walk at dusk or a paid seat on a boat.
Free, at dusk
Walking the Stanley Park seawall toward English Bay as the sun drops costs nothing and covers most of the same view a paid cruise sells, with the mountains across the water catching the last light. A picnic in Queen Elizabeth Park works the same way earlier in the evening, with roses and a city view instead of the water.
On the water
Vancouver by Sea runs seasonal sunset sailings from Jericho Sailing Centre between May and September, and Sea Dragon Charters sails a two-hour sunset trip out of Horseshoe Bay with something bubbly poured on board. For a longer outing, Salish Sea whale watching tours run three to five hours from Granville Island or Steveston and cost roughly $175 to $230 CAD per person.
Above the water
Harbour Air flies 20 to 45 minute flightseeing routes over the city and the Lions Gate Bridge for around $129 to $229 CAD per person, distinct from its cheaper point-to-point Victoria fares and worth booking as its own scenic slot. Morning flights tend to give calmer air and clearer views than a late afternoon departure, so it’s worth asking for an early slot if the schedule allows it.
Dinner after
Gastown and Yaletown both hold restaurants with a water view if the table faces the right way, and Granville Island’s market makes a good pre-dinner stop while the light is still low. Booking a table for early evening rather than late keeps the light in your favour for the walk beforehand, and leaves enough time afterward for one more stop, whether that’s a nightcap in Yaletown or another lap of the seawall. Between June and September, Bard on the Beach stages Shakespeare at Vanier Park with English Bay behind the stage, an easy pairing with an early dinner in Kitsilano.
Book a room with a harbour view through Booking.com so the view carries past dinner, and check the sightseeing page for more of the free viewpoints that work just as well for two as for one. Reserve the boat, the flight, or the dinner table first; those fill on a fixed schedule well before a walk on the seawall ever does, especially through the summer months when both the sunset sailings and the harbourfront restaurants book out days in advance.
