Vilnius for Couples on a Budget: Real Prices
The best evening two people can have in Vilnius costs nothing: walk the Vilnia riverside from the Bernardine Garden into Užupis at dusk, when the bridges are lit and the bars have their doors open. Everything else on a romantic weekend here is optional, and the gap between the free version and the expensive version is wider than in most European capitals.

The free evening, in order
Start in the Bernardine Garden under Castle Hill, follow the Vilnia east, cross into Užupis and read the 41-article constitution bolted to the wall along Paupio Street in dozens of languages. The bronze angel stands on its column in the square. It is a twenty-minute walk end to end and it is the single most atmospheric thing here that costs nothing. Trakai, and the boat that beats the castle
Twenty-eight kilometres west, the island castle sits on Lake Galvė and the view of it from a rowboat at golden hour is better than anything inside the walls. The train takes 30 to 35 minutes and costs €1.50 to €2.00 each, and you can skip the museum ticket entirely if the lake is what you came for; Go Vilnius covers the boating . In winter, when the lake freezes, a horse-drawn carriage along the lakeshore replaces it. Trakai trips with transport are the lazy version.
Where do you eat without overspending?
In the cellars. The Old Town’s Baroque buildings have vaulted brick basements and several are dining rooms, which is a better room than any rooftop in a city this low-rise. Restaurant Lokys on Stiklių has been run by the same family since 1972 and is the oldest restaurant in the Old Town; it keeps its own site . Is the balloon flight worth €140 each?
Yes, once. Vilnius is one of very few European capitals that permits balloons over its historic centre, and shared flights run April to October at dawn or in the last light for roughly €140 to €150 per person, so about €280 to €300 for two. The verdict
Spend on one thing, not three. If the trip is short, make it the balloon and eat in a cellar afterwards. If the trip is longer, take the Trakai boat instead and put the saving toward one night in an Old Town palace hotel rather than three nights of restaurant bills.
