Waterville with Children: Beaches and Gardens
Travelling with children to Waterville, County Kerry, means planning around the Atlantic: the beaches are wild, the weather changes quickly and the best family stops are indoors or in sheltered gardens. This page lists what suits children and what to avoid.
Rainy-day stop in the village
Sea Synergy Marine Awareness and Activity Centre has a touch pool, workshops on the shore and snorkelling with a marine biologist. Hours vary through the year, so confirm them before you go.
Gardens and a rope bridge at Kells
Kells Bay House and Gardens is about 40 km from Waterville, around 45 minutes by road. It opens daily from 9:30 to 18:00 all year, and the last entry is 17:00. Tickets are sold online at €9.50 for an adult, €7.50 for a child, and €30 for a family of two adults and up to three children aged up to 16. Look for the life-size dinosaur sculptures, and cross the SkyWalk, a rope bridge about 33.5 m long that hangs about 11 m above the Delligeenagh River. Kells also has a Blue Flag beach.
Fairy houses at Derrynane
Pick up the Fairy Trail leaflet at the café at Derrynane House. About two dozen fairy houses are hidden in the grounds. The house is open until 1 November 2026, children pay €3 and a family pays €13, and there is a café and toilets. The house then closes until mid-March 2027.
Two cautions: the beach has a marked no-swim section with strong currents, and the tidal path to Abbey Island has unprotected cliff edges on its south side, so it is not for small children.
Chocolate at St Finian’s Bay
Skelligs Chocolate Company lets visitors watch the makers and taste for free. Opening days vary, so check first.
Beaches and water safety
Ballinskelligs has a 2026 Blue Flag, with a castle and a priory at either end of the beach. The official bathing season is 1 June to 15 September. Kerry County Council lifeguards cover supervised beaches at weekends in June and early September and daily in July and August. Go into the water only where the lifeguard flag is flying.
Waterville Strand and Inny Strand face the open Atlantic with strong swell, and experienced surfers use them. Treat them as places for a beach walk and not for children to swim.
Out on the sea
The Skellig Michael landing tour bars under-12s. The island has 618 steep steps. The cruise around Skellig Michael and Little Skellig has no such limit. It lasts about 2.5 hours and costs from about €42 with Skellig Experience or about €60 with Casey’s. Gannets crowd Little Skellig. Boats leave from piers including Portmagee (about 35 minutes by road from Waterville), and bad weather often cancels trips, so book a flexible ticket.
Tips for parents
- Bring waterproofs and spare clothes in any season.
- Keep children away from the N70, a busy main road.
- Plan one outing a day, since drives on the Ring of Kerry are slow.
