3 days: the city core plus one full Bromo day
Three days is the sweet spot for a first Surabaya visit: two days for the Heroes history, the Old Town, and the food, then a full Mount Bromo sunrise day trip on Day 3. Only have a weekend? Day 1: Heroes history
Tugu Pahlawan (free grounds, modest museum fee, verify) and Hotel Majapahit’s facade on Jalan Tunjungan (free) anchor the morning. In the afternoon, the Al-Akbar Mosque (free entry, 99m minaret) and, if time allows, the Monkasel submarine museum for a modest fee. Lunch and dinner at busy local warungs, rawon first if you haven’t tried it.

Day 2: the Old Town and the House of Sampoerna
Spend the morning in the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel Mosque, dressing modestly, then Kya-Kya Chinatown nearby. In the afternoon, the House of Sampoerna’s kretek museum and café (verify current open status), then an evening walk along Jembatan Merah’s old colonial quarter, free.

Day 3: Mount Bromo
An organized jeep tour picks you up in the middle of the night for the roughly 3-4 hour drive via Probolinggo, reaching the Penanjakan viewpoint for sunrise over the Sea of Sand, then down to the crater itself for a 45-minute walk to the rim. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before booking. Book a Bromo sunrise tour a day or two ahead in dry season.
