2 days covers the city core, not a volcano trip
Two days is enough for Surabaya’s Heroes history, its Old Town, and its food, but not enough to add Mount Bromo or Kawah Ijen without turning this into a rushed overnight scramble. Day 1: Heroes history and the Old Town
Start at Tugu Pahlawan, the 41m monument commemorating the Battle of Surabaya (1945); the grounds are free, the 10 November Museum underneath a modest fee (verify current admission). Walk or take a short Grab to Hotel Majapahit on Jalan Tunjungan, free to view from outside, the 1911 building where the 1945 flag-tearing incident took place. In the afternoon, head to the Old Town: the Sunan Ampel Mosque and the Arab Quarter’s market lanes, dressing modestly since this is a working pilgrimage site, then Kya-Kya Chinatown nearby. Lunch at any busy warung rather than a specific named spot, a full meal runs Rp 20,000-50,000; try rawon or rujak cingur if you haven’t already.

End the day with a coffee near Tunjungan; Surabaya’s evening heat drops just enough after dark to make an outdoor seat worth it.
Day 2: Al-Akbar Mosque, the House of Sampoerna, and food
Start at the Al-Akbar Mosque, Indonesia’s second-largest, free entry, its 99m minaret worth the trip alone. Head to the House of Sampoerna, the 1862 colonial compound turned kretek museum, for the history and a coffee in its café (verify current open status). If time allows, the Monkasel submarine, a real walk-through Navy sub, is a short Grab ride away for a modest entry fee. Spend the afternoon eating: lontong balap, tahu tek, or sate klopo at a busy local warung, and if you want one sit-down meal, Hotel Majapahit’s restaurant covers that at a higher price point than the warungs.

Getting around on 2 days
Surabaya is hot and not walkable between most of these sights, so budget Grab or Gojek for every move rather than trying to string them together on foot.
