A First Week in Venice: 6 Slow Days
Six unhurried days in the lagoon
Six days is enough to stop rushing. This plan stays in Venice and its lagoon on purpose, trading day-trip mileage for a slower pace: the core sights, all three islands, a local sestiere, an art day and a beach day. Budget roughly EUR 40 a day plus your bed, and a 7-day vaporetto pass (about EUR 65) covers all the boats.
Day 1: San Marco and the Rialto
The free Basilica nave with a booked slot, the Rialto Bridge and market, and a cicchetti dinner at EUR 12 to 18.
Tip: start before 9am, when the square is quiet and gold.
Day 2: the Doge’s Palace and the Grand Canal
The Doge’s Palace, EUR 30 to 35 with the Bridge of Sighs, then Line 1 down the Grand Canal and a Zattere sunset.
Tip: book the palace ahead for the lower rate and no walk-up line.
Day 3: the lagoon islands
Murano, Burano and Torcello, all outside the access fee. Burano first, before the boats.
Tip: pack a lunch; the islands are the cheapest day here.
Day 4: Cannaregio, the Ghetto and Castello
The 1516 Ghetto and quiet Castello, with the best local eating off the tourist routes.
Tip: this is the day to eat where the locals stand at the bar.
Day 5: Dorsoduro’s art
The Accademia (around EUR 15) and the Peggy Guggenheim, then the Zattere.
Tip: reserve the Accademia in summer to avoid the queue.
Day 6: the Lido and Sant’Erasmo
Take a slow nature day: the Lido’s free beach, and the flat garden island of Sant’Erasmo for a quiet walk, both a vaporetto ride out.
Tip: check the last boat back from Sant’Erasmo, since evening services thin out.
