Two days in Venice for a first visit
Two days is enough for the core of Venice done properly: the San Marco sights and the Rialto on foot the first day, the Doge’s Palace and a full Grand Canal ride the second. No islands, no mainland, just the city at a first-timer’s pace. Budget roughly EUR 40 a day plus your bed, less if you lean on the free wins below.
Day 1: San Marco and the Rialto
Start in Piazza San Marco before 9am, before the day boats. The Basilica nave is free; book the timed slot online and cover shoulders and knees at the door. Skip the EUR 10 Campanile lift on a tight budget. Walk to the Rialto Bridge and the market beneath it, then cross the Grand Canal the local way on a EUR 2 traghetto. For dinner, do a bacaro crawl: cicchetti at EUR 1 to 3 a bite, a couple of glasses of wine, EUR 12 to 18 all in.
Tip: reserve the Basilica slot the night before, so day one starts without a queue.
Day 2: the Doge’s Palace and the Grand Canal
Book the Doge’s Palace ahead, EUR 30 to 35, which also covers the Correr Museum and the Bridge of Sighs crossing. In the afternoon, buy a 24-hour vaporetto pass (EUR 25) and ride Line 1 the length of the Grand Canal, then get off wherever looks good. Finish on the Zattere in Dorsoduro at sunset, which costs nothing and empties out once the day crowds leave.
