Travel advisory: Egypt sits on the edge of the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The country is not a combatant, and Cairo, Giza, and the Nile Valley remain the normal, actively-visited tourist core, with 2026 tourism hitting record numbers. There has been limited spillover, including a July 2026 drone strike on ships at Damietta port in the north, far from any tourist site. At the time of writing the US State Department lists Egypt at Level 2 (“Exercise Increased Caution”), with “Do Not Travel” limited to the Sinai interior and the remote Western Desert, not the places in this guide. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, since the situation is fluid.
The 7-day version: adds a fly-onward Luxor leg
Seven days builds on the 5-day plan (Giza, the GEM, Islamic Cairo, Saqqara, Memphis, Dahshur, Alexandria) by trading Fayoum for a genuine fly-onward extension to Luxor. This is the one part of this itinerary that is not a day trip, budget the flight and buffer time honestly.

Day 1: Giza and the GEM
Start early at the Giza Plateau (around 700 EGP, about $14), routed through the new south-side visitor center onto free electric shuttle buses. Agree camel and photo prices out loud or skip them. Afternoon at the Grand Egyptian Museum (about $30 through October 2026, rising to $35 from November), fully open since November 2025 with the complete Tutankhamun collection.
Day 2: The Citadel and Khan el-Khalili
Morning at the Citadel of Salah El Din and the Muhammad Ali (Alabaster) Mosque, a combined ticket around 180 EGP (about $3.60). Afternoon in free-to-wander Khan el-Khalili, with tea at El Fishawy Café.
Day 3: Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur
A full day to “the other pyramids”: the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, Memphis, and Dahshur’s Bent and Red Pyramids.
Day 4: Alexandria
Take the train from Ramses Station (roughly 2 to 3 hours each way) for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, and the Corniche.
Day 5: Fly to Luxor
Take the roughly 1-hour-10-minute flight to Luxor. Spend the afternoon at Karnak Temple, the vast temple complex on the Nile’s east bank. This is a fly-onward extension, not a day trip, book the flight well ahead and verify current fares. The overnight Watania sleeper train from Cairo is a cheaper, slower alternative if you’d rather not fly.
Day 6: The Valley of the Kings
Cross to Luxor’s West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, the royal tombs of the New Kingdom pharaohs, pairing well with the Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Queens nearby if you have extra time.
Day 7: Return or continue
Fly back to Cairo (or onward to Aswan, and eventually a 3-4 night Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, if you’re extending the trip further). Build in buffer time for this last leg, domestic flight schedules can shift.
How much does 7 days from Cairo cost?
Figure roughly $90-155 for the first four Cairo-area days, plus flights (verify current fares) and roughly $35-55 for Luxor entries across days five and six, plus $15-40 a night for a budget room.
