2 days covers Krakow’s core, if you budget the two Wawel tickets right
This route covers Rynek Główny, Wawel Hill (Castle and Cathedral, two separate tickets from two separate offices), and Kazimierz and Podgórze across the river, with a milk-bar lunch and a Tuesday museum window built in if your dates allow it. Expect roughly 160-260 PLN a person per day including a bed, meals, and transit; the daily tables below break down where it goes. With more time on the ground, the 3-day itinerary adds a Wieliczka Salt Mine day trip on top of this exact core.
Book these before you go
- A Wawel Castle State Rooms ticket for a fixed entry time, walk-up tickets sell out by late morning May-September
- A room booked ahead for the summer peak or the Pierogi Festival (12-16 August 2026), when Old Town rates spike
- Nothing for Auschwitz-Birkenau on this short a trip; that day trip needs its own day, see the 4-day itinerary
Day 1: Rynek Główny and Wawel Hill
Start in Rynek Główny , Europe’s largest surviving medieval square, free to stand in; the hejnał trumpet call plays live every hour from St Mary’s taller tower and cuts off mid-note. The Cloth Hall’s ground floor is free to browse; its upper-floor gallery runs 35 PLN, free on Tuesdays, so check your dates. St Mary’s Basilica interior (Veit Stoss altarpiece) runs about 15 PLN. Walk to Wawel Hill: the grounds and courtyard are free, but the Castle State Rooms (57 PLN) and the Cathedral (26 PLN combined ticket) are sold separately at separate offices, budget for both as two line items, not one “Wawel ticket.” The Dragon’s Den (15 PLN, April-October only) and the free fire-breathing Dragon statue sit at the base of the hill. Lunch at a milk bar (bar mleczny), a full meal for 20-35 PLN; dinner at a mid-range Old Town spot.

Day 2: Kazimierz, Podgórze, and Schindler’s Factory
Cross into Kazimierz, the pre-war Jewish quarter for around 500 years until 1939, not the WWII ghetto (that was across the river in Podgórze, see below). Wander Szeroka Street free; the Remuh Synagogue and adjoining cemetery cost about 10 PLN combined (5 reduced), modest dress and a head covering provided for men. Lunch is a zapiekanka at Plac Nowy’s Okrąglak hall, 6-10 PLN at Endzior, one of the cheapest real meals in the city. Cross the Bernatek footbridge into Podgórze, where the Nazis forced Krakow’s Jewish population in March 1941 and sealed it as the Krakow Ghetto; Ghetto Heroes Square, with its memorial of 70 empty bronze chairs, is free to visit. Schindler’s Factory, the museum on Oskar Schindler’s former enamelware works, runs about 60 PLN and is worth the timed booking if your budget stretches to it. Dinner back in Kazimierz.

Getting around on 2 days: walk it or buy a single ticket?
Old Town, Wawel, and most of Day 1 are walkable without transit. Day 2’s Kazimierz-Podgórze loop is walkable too via the Bernatek footbridge, but a single MPK tram ticket (4-6 PLN depending on the time tier) saves the legs if you’re short on time; a 24-hour pass at 20 PLN only pays off past about three rides. Full fare details are in the main Krakow guide .
Book the Wawel Castle ticket before you arrive rather than queueing on the day, and treat the Cathedral as its own line item. Everything else on this 2-day core runs cheap enough that the schedule matters more than the money.
