3 days is the sweet spot: the city core plus one real day trip

This route covers Rynek Główny and Wawel Hill, Kazimierz and Podgórze, and a half-day trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, timed so you’re back in the city by evening. Expect roughly 160-350 PLN a person per day including a bed, meals, and transit; the daily tables below break down where it goes. Only have a weekend? The 2-day itinerary covers just the core. Day 1: Rynek Główny and Wawel Hill

Rynek Główny , Europe’s largest surviving medieval square, is free to stand in, and the hejnał trumpet call plays live every hour from St Mary’s taller tower, cutting off mid-note. The Cloth Hall’s ground floor is free; its upper gallery runs 35 PLN, free on Tuesdays. Walk to Wawel Hill: the grounds are free, but budget the Castle State Rooms (57 PLN) and the Cathedral (26 PLN) as two separate tickets from two separate offices, not one combined “Wawel” entry. Lunch at a milk bar, a full meal for 20-35 PLN.

Day 2: Kazimierz and Podgórze

Kazimierz was Krakow’s Jewish quarter for around 500 years until 1939, not the WWII ghetto, that was across the river in Podgórze after March 1941. Wander Szeroka Street free; the Remuh Synagogue and cemetery cost about 10 PLN combined. Lunch is a zapiekanka at Plac Nowy’s Okrąglak hall (6-10 PLN at Endzior). Cross the Bernatek footbridge to Ghetto Heroes Square (free, the 70-chair memorial) and Schindler’s Factory (about 60 PLN, timed booking recommended).

Day 3: Wieliczka Salt Mine

Wieliczka, a working salt mine since the 13th century and one of the original 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites (1978), sits about 30 minutes outside the city. The Tourist Route and the Miners’ Route both run 143 PLN (121 reduced), same price for two different experiences; the Tourist Route ends at St Kinga’s Chapel, an entire chapel carved from rock salt. Book online ahead, English-language departures run roughly every 30 minutes, 9am-3pm, and early-morning or late-afternoon slots are quietest. Back in the city by mid-afternoon, use the rest of the day for the Planty or Kazimierz’s streets, both free.

Getting around on 3 days: walk it or buy a pass?

Days 1 and 2 are walkable without transit beyond a tram ride or two into Podgórze. Day 3’s Wieliczka run needs a minibus or train, on top of that a 24-hour MPK pass (20 PLN) covers all your in-city moves; below three rides a day, single tickets (4-9 PLN by time tier) usually work out cheaper. Book the Wawel Castle and Wieliczka slots before you land; both sell out same-day walk-up in peak season. Everything else on this 3-day core runs cheap enough that the schedule, not the money, is what needs planning.
